The vision of the University of North Dakota Institute of Energy Studies is to pursue new frontiers in energy research and education that enables the development of the next generation of integrated energy system technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable. To realize this vision, the Institute for Energy Studies has established the following mission: 1) Facilitate the coordination of CEM’s multidisciplinary energy education, research, development and commercialization activities in partnership with UND campus units, other NDUS campuses, and federal, state, and industrial partners; 2) Provide a well-trained work force cognizant of the issues facing the energy industry today and in the future generations by engaging students in education that is focused on the technical, social, political, environmental, and economic needs of the world-wide community; and 3) Develop a multi-disciplinary scientifically balanced research portfolio aimed at accelerating the implementation of efficient and environmentally sustainable energy production technologies.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Institute for Energy Studies, College of Engineering and Mines, this primary purpose of this position is to provide engineering support for the Institute’s research activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory-, pilot- and full-scale tests and report results.
  • Design, test and install experimental equipment.
  • Use process models to simulate and design full-scale systems
  • Perform economic and feasibility studies, including definition of the process, development of the process flow diagrams, material and energy balances, equipment selection, sizing and costing and estimation of overall capital and operating costs.
  • Work with students, staff and faculty to complete projects.
  • Preparation of reports, presentation, and funding proposals for work conducted or to be conducted.

Required Competencies

  • Excellent writing/communication skills

Minimum Requirements

  • BS in an engineering discipline or equivalent
  • Experience with laboratory/bench-scale equipment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office software – Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Excel
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

  • Experience/thesis work to be relevant to IES portfolio
    • Materials characterization
    • Traditional energy generation
    • Renewables
    • Advanced energy generation
    • Emissions control – CO2 capture/utilization
    • Rare earth elements chemistry and processing
    • Energy storage including batteries
  • Co-op and or/other non-student work experience
  • Field/pilot plant experience
  • Modeling experience

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$60,000+, Full Time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule/Start Date

40-hours per week. Primarily 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, but some evenings and weekends may be required. Starting March 2021.
