The Minnehaha County Highway Department has two summer internships available for students enrolled in an Engineering or GIS program to conduct and update our culvert inventory and records. This work entails assessing the conditions of concrete and metal culverts located on approximately 350 miles of county highways. This pair of interns would be outside and away from the office about 90% of the time between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., four days a week, Monday through Thursday. All weekends are three-day weekends with Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off. There are two summer internships available that will begin in mid-May 2021 and end in mid-August 2021.

County staff are committed to providing a rich and rewarding experience. As time allows, interns will be invited to attend select engineering design and coordination meetings with consultants, transportation planning meetings, construction inspection reviews, and other administrative meetings in order to round out their experience. After completing their summers with us, students frequently comment on how their involvement with the engineers and technicians at the County Highway Department shape and influence their career aspirations. They gain insights into what it means to be an engineer working in transportation and local government while contrasting that with some exposure to private practice and consulting.

Please attach a cover letter and resume to the application.
