Position Information

Is directly accountable and responsible to the Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources lead faculty.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Responsible for maintaining agriculture labs (Bismarck State College and Bismarck Public Schools), laboratory equipment and the BSC greenhouse.
  2. Responsible for driving vans for student field trips and labs.

Position Description & Details

Maintains agriculture labs - 65%
  1. Prepares materials and instrumentation required for various agriculture labs under the supervision of the faculty member responsible for a particular lab.
  2. Keeps laboratory stockrooms well stocked, clean, and organized at all times to ensure the health and safety of faculty and students.
  3. Assists in updating and overseeing agriculture technology and related equipment.
  4. Maintains BSC greenhouse facility, including general repair, organization, and cleanliness.
  5. Maintains BSC greenhouse plant materials, including watering, feeding, pruning, propagation, testing, ordering/stocking supplies and pest management.
  6. Keeps up-to-date knowledge of proper storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals. Ensures chemicals and solutions are properly labeled.
  7. Performs general tool, machinery, and equipment maintenance.
  8. Controls student access to the tool room by checking and recording tools in/out of the tool room while keeping an accurate inventory of tools, equipment, supplies and ordering all items as needed for the tool room and labs.

Drives van for field trips and supervises student workers - 30%
  1. Assists in driving and maintenance of vans for various Bismarck State College labs and field trips.
  2. Supervises student workers assigned to the Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources discipline. Makes sure they are wearing proper safety apparel and are following safety procedures. Lab coordinator and faculty will review duties of student workers.

Miscellaneous duties - 5%
  1. Supports innovation, creativity, and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the college.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned or required by the agriculture faculty, Career & Technology Department Chair and/or the Dean of Current and Emerging Technologies.

  • Frequently - 34-66% - Stand, walk, sit, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally - 1-33% - Reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop/kneel/crouch, or crawl.

Band: 4000 - Technical and Paraprofessional

Sub Band: 4300 - Research and Science

Family: 4310 - Natural/Physical Science Technical/Paraprofessional

Term: 9 months (mid-August to mid-May) at 100%

Status: Full-time regular, (75% when spread over 12 months), Nonexempt

Minimum Requirements

  1. Requires appropriate associate degree or 4 years of related experience.
  2. Valid driver's license with ability to drive a light utility vehicle.
  3. Agriculture and mechanics experience.
  4. General tool and equipment maintenance knowledge.
  5. Excellent organizational skills and work ethic.
  6. Good interpersonal skills and common courtesy with employees, students, and the public.
  7. Good working knowledge of computer software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office, e-mail - Outlook, electronic calendar - Oracle, etc.).
  8. Physical requirements include heavy carrying and lifting (estimated weight 50 pounds).


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience operating a forklift.
  2. Experience working in a greenhouse, including watering, feeding, pruning, propagation and testing plants.
  3. Experience with proper storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals.
