Editorial Director, WTMJ (Finance)WTMJ, The Scripps NBC station in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is searching for an aggressive Editorial Director.The Editorial Director reports to the News Director, and as a member of the content leadership team, they work closely with peers in executing the Scripps content strategy so that local consumer expectations are met. This includes working closely with the News Director and the content leadership team to set the local content vision and strategy to address consumer needs.The primary focus of the editorial director is leading a large, shared resource, content operations group that collects, edits and provides daily content for delivery on all platforms including app, OTT audio/video, social, television and web site. Additionally, the Editorial Director is directly responsible for operational efficiency including daily assignments for the MMJs and Reporters on staff, meeting content standards, delivery process, quality control and continuous improvement.WHAT YOU'LL DO: With the News Director, operates in a lead role among the content leadership team, facilitating collaboration to ensure the Scripps content strategy is leveraged as the foundation for specific local content strategy. Leads the daily editorial process so that all assignments are executed and delivered on time and are of the highest possible quality. Partners with peers to allocate coverage resources for all coverage, often in a frequently-changing news environment. Manages and schedules teams of assignment desk, reporters and photographers for all platforms Ensures logistics are managed smoothly, are monitored and perform to expectations so that real-time editorial information into and out of the newsroom and the field is optimized. With a span of control containing over two-thirds of the news personnel at the station, oversees management of the assignment desk, Reporters, Multi-media Journalists, Photographers and Editors. Ultimately responsible for workforce planning, hiring, training, scheduling, and coaching to optimize engagement and performance. Serves as a storytelling coach and mentor to content gatherers. Recruitment for Reporters and Multimedia Journalists. Ensures systems are in place so that expectations are clear and hand-offs between content groups are seamless on a daily basis. Engages peers and staff in the design, measurement and continuous improvement of newsroom workflow. Leverages market knowledge, network and resources for content discovery. Manages shifting priorities and conflicts regarding resource constraints with effective communication, negotiation and collaboration. Provides direction and coaching to copy, provides coaching and guidance. Oversees training, coaching and development of assignment and reporting staff to ensure the strategy for our content is understood and followed. Develops a pipeline of reporting talent for this and other Scripps local media businesses. Responsible for assignment and reporting budgetary planning and monitoring. Other duties as assigned. WHAT YOU'LL BRING: Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related discipline required. 10 years of experience in positions of progressive responsibility required. 3 years of management experience in content media departments required. Experience managing large teams strongly preferred. Experience managing union employees strongly preferred.
