The Herald in Grand Forks, N.D., is looking for its next rising star: a managing editor to lead and develop a team of reporters in a fast-paced, digital-first newsroom.

The ideal candidate will be smart, positive and eager to lead a team of talented and energetic reporters. Members of our management team must encourage great ideas, collaboration and innovation. Our next managing editor should be excited about the news, ready to coach reporters and embrace digital storytelling.

The Herald's managing editor will lead the development of engaging journalism for a targeted audience that may be used in both digital and print formats. The person in this role should be familiar with data and enterprise reporting and digital analytics tools.

The managing editor will work alongside the editor on story planning and development, story assignments, gathering visuals in all mediums and measuring digital goals.

The Herald is constantly evolving and aims to develop new concepts and approaches to reflect readers' interests and habits. We believe in telling great stories that reflect our communities and readers, blending writing skill with compelling visuals to bring those stories to life. We aim to tell the stories our readers need and want to know. We aim to be creative, develop great content and value accurate, watchdog journalism.

Grand Forks is a large, vibrant college town with an array of opportunities for professional and personal fun: performing, visual and creative arts, recreation and outdoors activities, sports and a variety of dining and nightlife options.

Candidates should have a bachelor's degree in journalism, with one to three years of editing experience preferred. Those without editing experience or who have an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered. A strong knowledge of AP style, along with excellent grammar and spelling skills is required. Also, candidates must be able to in a fast-paced newsroom, be resourceful and provide ideas that our readers will find interesting and compelling.

Applicants must possess a reliable vehicle covered with acceptable insurance and a valid driver's license with a record insurable by the company.

The Herald was launched June 26, 1879, more than 10 years before North Dakota and South Dakota were granted statehood. In 1929 the Herald was purchased by the Ridder family and M.M. Oppegard. In 1974 the Ridder group of newspapers merged with Knight Newspapers to form Knight Ridder then in 2006, was purchased by Forum Communications Company. Although the Herald is based in North Dakota, a large percentage of readers live in Minnesota. The Herald includes Minnesota as well as North Dakota in any stories that gauge the regional impact of national and international news. The paper circulates in 8 counties of northeastern North Dakota and in 6 counties of northwestern Minnesota. It’s delivered across the upper Red River Valley, with a primary circulation area stretching from Rugby, N.D. to Bemidji, Minn., the Canadian border to Hillsboro, N.D.
