Job Description for Commissioning Manager

The Commissioning Manager is a key member of the project commissioning team. The Commissioning Manager is tasked with executing pre-commissioning/commissioning activities to ensure the successful start-up of newly constructed facilities. The Commissioning Manager will have the opportunity to commission and start-up plants of varying, core technologies, such as: Air Separation, HyCO, Cogeneration, CO2 Production, etc. Travel throughout the Americas may be required, to support all business units.

Prior to mobilizing to site, the commissioning manager supports the commissioning planning phase by:

  • Participating in developing the project commissioning plan; providing input to the schedule, system/subsystem breakdown, WBS, etc.
  • Developing commissioning procedures for activities such as line cleaning (air or steam blows), catalyst loading, vessel inspections/cold box checkout, rotating equipment checkout, instrumentation checkout, etc.
  • Participating in the development of the initial revision of the plant start-up procedure, to be red-lined during start-up.
  • Gathering all relevant process and vendor data, drawings, etc. to support in-field troubleshooting.
  • Completing all necessary training as assigned by the commissioning manager.
  • At the construction site, the commissioning manager will focus on:
  • Adhering to all safety standards, maintaining a strong commitment on achieving zero incidents/accidents throughout. Completes all regulatory and site specific training as required.
  • Safely planning the execution of assigned commissioning activities; partnering with the subcontractor to lead contractor work teams to complete these activities.
  • Finding and understanding all relevant technical data (drawings, manuals, data sheets, etc.) to make technically sound decision to solve problems encountered during commissioning.
  • Demonstrating a strong willingness to learn and increase proficiency in the commissioning of a wide variety of systems encompassing all engineering disciplines (electrical, controls, mechanical, etc.)
  • Start-up of plant equipment, under close supervision, and demonstrating understanding of the plant control strategy, operating parameters, etc.
  • Transferring knowledge acquired during commissioning/start-up to the operations to ensure proper training of operators, plant engineers, etc.
  • Participating in the Flawless Start-Up initiative, geared at anticipating issues during commissioning/start-up and correcting them ahead of time. Comes up with creative solutions to challenging technical problems.
Maintaining an extremely strong sense of urgency/commitment and organization to meet project deadlines.

  • Qualifications of the Commissioning Manager
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical) preferred
  • HS diploma or GED required
  • Willing to relocate temporarily for project commissioning (3 months, typical)
  • Solution-oriented, with excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to perform well under stress, and under time constraints
  • Comfortable in both Corporate and Field environments
  • Comply with all corporate policies and practices
  • Able to work effectively and collaborate within a diverse team, and organization
  • Strong organizational skills, able to multitask effectively, with changing priorities
  • Familiarity with Google, MS Office, and MS Project
  • Ability to work extended hours/shift work as project needs dictate.

  • Upgrading existing analog radio system to a digital system
  • Hitting pre-construction and construction
  • Establishing construction budgets for projects
  • Obtaining, updating and archiving all construction documentation for construction projects, including construction schedules
  • Support various projects during construction
  • Removing cost and time from new construction and capital construction projects
  • Coordinate the tenant construction process and facilitate timely construction projects
  • Supervise general construction contractors and sub-contractors
  • Perform additional virtual construction tasks to support construction management duties
  • Develop construction budgets for all projects
  • Manage wind farm construction projects
  • Controlling construction documentation received at site
