Chief Data Scientist, UnitedHealthcare Technology

In this newly created leadership role, you will be accountable to lead the transformation of UnitedHealthcare Technology (UHCT) engineering teams and products to be data driven and empower all product lines to have AI capabilities. This will entail defining and evangelizing the impact that all roles - engineers, data scientists, product, etc. - have in enabling a Software 2.0 future for UHCT. This will necessitate defining the future state operating model for the product engineering teams, representing UHCT Data and AI technologies, as well as establishing a shared AI Enabling services team for UHCT. The Chief Data Scientist will lead the alignment of existing data shared services and teams into the UHCT Product model and enabling AI to be embedded in all of our products. You will work with all of UnitedHealth Group and the UHCT CTO to bridge legacy teams into a modern AI Engineering organization.

Specific responsibilities will include:

• Set the technical vision & strategy for Data Science within UHCT (with an emphasis on automation, self-service and end to end delivery of platforms & services using infrastructure as code and agile delivery methodologies)
• Drive the company towards greater AI & ML acumen across product teams
• Own 'The HOW' re: AI & ML product implementations
• Represent UHCT data strategy and platform roadmaps that align to product roadmaps
• Provide leadership that enables building world-class technology with embedded AI & ML capabilities
• Build Data Science capabilities that allow for: operational stability; performance; efficiency; audit/control management; and scalability of Platforms and Journeys
• Develop and promote modern Data Engineering and Data Science practices with enterprise-wide scope and consideration
• Accelerate the depth and breadth of Data Scientist skills across the organization
• Develop deep relationships with CIO organizations to ensure practices proactively support application delivery priorities, performance, redundancy, and capacity requirements
• Provide thought leadership and use established global intelligence networks, to drive enterprise Data Science approaches that ensure UHCT is at the forefront of Data Science best practices
• Engage leadership within UHCT to drive transformation, innovation, and adoption of Data Science best practices
• Review current and emerging technical matters to identify product, customer, and full stack technology impacts
• Build the UHCT Data Science brand and employee value proposition to attract and retain industry-leading Data Science talent
• Help elevate the quality of Data Science across technology
• Act as an internal evangelist for Data Science across the enterprise
• Drive enterprise platform thinking and act as the "glue" for our data from the technology perspective

Candidates will possess:

• 15 + years of progressive technology leadership experiences
• 5 + years of creating and deploying AI/ML solutions at scale
• Demonstrated ability to build a team from the ground up (as this is a new role and function)
• Proven track record of attracting and hiring talent in the AI/ML domain
• History of public speaking, writing and evangelizing in the Data/AI/ML space
• Experience guiding an enterprise through its analytic and platform modernization journey
• Demonstrated ability to prescribe and utilize best in class software practices (CI/CD, scalable architectures, etc.) to deploy AI solutions
• Knowledge of Software 2.0 approaches
• Demonstrated success leveraging technology to meet business objectives
• Proven history of effective working relationships with leaders and key business partners to drive change agendas
• Demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective
• History of executing with excellence: setting purposeful goals and achieving them through intelligent actions, which balancing competing priorities without losing momentum behind execution
• Experience leading through influence in a large, matrixed, global environment
• Experience leading large engineering teams and management responsibilities with senior level team members as direct reports
• Leadership style which fosters accountability, transparent communication and innovation
• High level of emotional intelligence
• Outstanding collaboration, strong influencing, problem solving and negotiation skills
• Proven ability to sell ideas to others outside of your direct team members
