Director of Research and Prospect ManagementCarroll UniversityClassification:Administrative Staff- Full Time- 12 Month- 2080 HoursReports To:Senior Director of Annual Giving Programs and Advancement ServicesSummary:The director of research and prospect management is an essential fundraising partner within the Carroll University division of institutional advancement. The director is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and conducting research that build a robust pipeline of major and planned giving donor prospects for the University. The director will improve our appreciation and understanding of prospective and current donors by conducting research and screenings, preparing profiles and reports, and contributing to effective management of prospect data in the Raiser's Edge database. Working strategically and collaboratively, the director will effectively partner with the Carroll University advancement team to research, plan and execute strategies that accomplish the flow of prospects into and through the major gift pipeline. The director is a critical member of the development team in helping sustain and grow our major and planned giving programs.Responsibilities:Oversee prospect development including prospect research and identification, pipeline moves management, and key performance metrics. Establish and maintain best practice methodologies for research techniques, reporting templates, and all process documentation. Develop in-depth profiles, lists, reports, and screenings to help gift officers strategically achieve their goals. Use prospect research to provide analysis, benchmarking, and forecasting of our ability to meet fundraising goals. Coordinate with advancement services staff to achieve effective systems of records management. Conduct research: Collect, confirm, analyze, interpret, and summarize complex biographical and financial data; wealth assessment; philanthropic assessment. Create briefing materials for the president, vice president, avp for development and other senior staff and volunteers to inform personal contacts and solicitations. Introduce and manage special projects which may involve researching new markets, financial trends, industry analysis and large fundraising campaigns; keep current on research and fundraising trends through regular contact with development and research colleagues at peer institutions as well as vendors. Enhance division of institutional advancement staff members understanding of research through effective communication and training Partner with leadership and assist with organizing and coordinating prospect/donor strategy meetings. Collaborate with development staff during strategy meetings in the development of cultivation and solicitation strategies and facilitate moves management. Provide leadership in area of responsibility. Strategic plans and annual goals are clear and reflect interests of all development departments. Goals are achieved on deadline. Research is accurate, well written, and presented and provided in a timely fashion. Research methodology is current and effective in order to identify new prospects, develop biographical and financial profiles on prospects, and assist in determining strategies for engagement and solicitation. Understands the importance of ethical behavior and confidentiality in conducting research and provides work of the highest quality. Collaborative and productive working relationships with colleagues and vendors. Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, and strategic thinking. Demonstrates complete knowledge of development business practices. Demonstrates facility with best in practice, state-of-the-art research and prospect management approaches. Perform other duties as requested, delegated or assigned.Qualifications:Education and/or Experience:Bachelor's degree requiredMinimum of 5 years' experience with prospect research and analysis in fundraising or related field including experience with relational databases. Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Demonstrated management and organizational skills; strong project management and problem-solving skills. Outstanding written and oral communication and presentation skills. Proficiency in conducting donor research with experience in recognizing and assessing wealth indicators and giving capacity; analytical skills. Ability to synthesize, analyze, summarize and present critical information in a variety of formats for various University constituents. Meticulous attention to detail. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with and through others; ability to work independently and as part of a team. Curiosity and a complete respect for confidentiality. Self- motivated; ability to establish priorities and flexibility to adjust priorities to meet changing needs. Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of philanthropy and in particular the ethics and best practices espoused by APRA (Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement) are preferred.
