Job Responsibilities: This position will assist in plot research design and implementation, seed counting and packaging, planting and harvesting of crops, herbicide/fungicide application, and laboratory work such as soil and protein analyses. This position will also assist with livestock care which includes forage and water monitoring, livestock handling and basic health and veterinary care. Other responsibilities include facility and grounds maintenance. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of: Farming practices; irrigation system operation; plant, soil and water sampling; machinery operation and maintenance (tractors, implements, seeders, etc.); proper livestock handling; spreadsheet and data entry; computer operation and software use. Skill & Ability to: Operate field machinery; work independently or as part of a team; accurately collect and prepare samples for analysis; learn cattle care and handling; work in various weather conditions; lift up to 75lbs; and communicate information clearly and concisely. Required License: Valid driver's license. Comments: The primary location for this position will be SDSU West River Agronomy Research Farm which is approximately 6 miles from the city of Sturgis, South Dakota. The site consists of 80+ farmable acres and a large facility with classroom, office, storage and shop spaces. SDSU is a tobacco free environment.
