Position Overview This is a highly skilled position involving control of the depth and smoothness of the asphalt mat behind the Asphalt Paving machine. Observes distribution of paving material along screed and controls the direction of the screed to eliminate voids at curbs and joints, other equipment may include Bobcat, Self propelled broom, roller(asphalt or dirt),Key Responsibilities Operates Screed on back of asphalt paving machine rubber tired or track type Manipulates cranks to control the depth of paving machine that spreads and levels asphaltic concrete on sub-grade of highway and related surfaces such as parking lots, streets, etc., turns hand-wheels to raise or lower screeds, regulates width of creed May perform other related duties, such as adding or removing screed extensions, installing or removing automatic devices, grade log or other accessories associated with the machine. Thorough understanding of all aspects of the paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, oil consistencies, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving. The operator is responsible for the efficient working condition of the equipment and is expected to perform minor servicing and maintenance or refer major problems to the supervisor. Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required. Other duties as may be assigned. Qualtifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education/Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required 5 to 10 years related asphalt and road construction experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Must have valid drivers license. CDL preferred but not required. Work Requirements Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Knowledge in operating heavy construction equipment. Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in construction and paving. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations and construction sites. Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgement. Valid drivers license, CDL preferred. Knowledge/Skill Requirements Thorough operational knowledge of an asphalt paver. Ability to operate equipment safely and efficiently under a variety of working conditions. Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as being able to work independently with attention to detail. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to operate heavy and complex equipment requiring skill and the exercise of independent judgment. Ability to professionally interact with customers, and assist with issues that may arise. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Able to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to manipulate objects or controls, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk and hear. May require sitting for extended periods of time. Vision abilities (with correction) include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to adjust focus. Able to climb ladders and work at heights. Able to work in all weather conditions. Must be able to exert up to 10-20 lbs. constantly to move objects, 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally. Work Environment Able to work in all weather conditions. While performing the duties of the job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and risk of electrical shock or burn.
