Description

This position develops and maintains customized Laravel PHP web applications using MySQL databases, based on user requirements documentation. Creates and maintains customized content management systems. Responsible for security and efficiency of databases and web applications. Works in a fast-paced environment, meeting deadlines and achieving project objectives. The web developer must collaborate effectively with project staff to meet shared goals and be dedicated to quality work.

The position will work with the Rural Health Information Hub (https://www.ruralhealthinformation.org), a federally-funded national information center on rural health issues along with other grant funded projects.

Department

The Center for Rural Health connects resources and knowledge to strengthen the health of people in rural communities. For 40 years, we have worked with the public and private sectors expanding a circle of partners to develop creative solutions to critical health issues. The Center is located at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks. Our approach is multi-disciplinary, as we create solutions to complex challenges. The Center for Rural Health works with communities, healthcare organizations, healthcare providers, policy-makers, researchers, tribal nations, and rural health stakeholders. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Development and maintenance of websites and databases.

    • Interpret staff/user requirements and translate into databases and websites.

    • Provide CSS, HTML, and web development software support to web team.

    • Program data-driven web applications allowing users to input and retrieve accurate information.

    • Develop, maintain and improve Laravel PHP web applications and database interfaces for internal and public use.

    • Design, code and test technical solutions for security and functionality.

    • Identify and troubleshoot problems with websites by responding to staff/user concerns, monitoring error logs and conducting quality assurance reviews.

    • Research technical solutions and methods.

    • Follow current internal coding standards and document/comment code.

    • Work with cross-functional team to plan for and address usability and accessibility issues on websites.

    • Work with webmaster and project staff to assess new web standards, technologies and trends.

    • Collaborate in the planning for future enhancement of websites.

    • Maintain, improve and optimize existing databases.

    • Provide ongoing support for databases and database applications.

    • Write complex queries and update statements, including batch updates.

    • Monitor, analyze, and improve performance of queries to optimize site speed.

    • Document database structure. Ensure security of data, including passwords and user data.

  • Assist with server maintenance.

    • Install and update operating system and software.

    • Write scripts for task automation.

    • Set up and configure new websites.

    • Maintain server backup software.

    • Troubleshoot server issues.

    • Coordinate with UNDSMHS Information Resources server administrator.

  • Participate on project teams and contribute to project planning.

    • Collaborate with cross-functional team to determine user requirements.

    • Identify and communicate technology options to project staff and work collaboratively to develop application strategies and solutions.

    • Work with project leadership to develop workload estimates and project schedules, in order to complete projects on schedule and as requested.

    • Proactively communicate progress, problems and planned actions to project leadership.

    • Follow project plans (e.g., wireframes) while demonstrating an understanding of the larger goals of the organization.

  • Maintain technical expertise and participate in professional activities.

    • Remain up to date with the latest developments in the field, including new web programming technologies, security concerns, and user experience best practices.

    • Identify and attend appropriate training to enhance skills and meet project needs.

    • Participate in meetings of the Center for Rural Health and assigned projects.

Required Competencies

  • Knowledge of database structure and SQL.

  • Experience collaborating throughout the entire project cycle, from research, strategy, information architecture, visual design, front-end development and maintenance.

  • A solid grasp of modern front-end web development, such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript and their associated build components.

  • A solid grasp of back-end web development environments, including HTTP, web servers, databases, and associated web frameworks.

  • Familiarity with user experience principles.

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Must generate high quality products in a timely manner.

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize, multi-task, and take initiative.

Minimum Requirements

  • Two years post-secondary education in web programming, computer science, information technology, or related field. May substitute directly related work experience or education for minimum qualification requirements.

  • Three years progressive and relevant work experience in programming data-driven web applications using Linux, PHP, MySQL, and Javascript.

  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Experience with Laravel.

  • Experience with Ubuntu Linux administration.

  • Experience with Git, Nginx, web APIs, VueJS, web accessibility, and GIS/mapping technologies

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

Salary range is $47,000 - $85,000/year based on experience and qualifications. Full-time, Benefited, Exempt. This position is partially grant-funded.

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
