The Senior Product Engineer / Specialist - Enclosed Drive role encompasses the design and analysis of parts, components, circuits and systems associated with Industrial Control Panels utilizing Variable Frequency drives. The SPEE plans, conducts and coordinates a range of complex engineering activities encompassing one or more engineering disciplines. The SPEE conducts complex analyses and develops recommendations based on sound engineering practices and business considerations. Serves as consultant to management and customers regarding advanced technical studies, their potential application and the resolution of complex problems. Your responsibilities Under general guidance, perform various engineering duties requiring the exercise of judgment and application of standard engineering principles and practices. Generate detailed electrical design solutions, drawings and bills of materials for electrical systems and products. Serve as technical consultant, advisor and spokesperson for the organization on highly significant matters and exert considerable influence regarding focus and direction of engineering activities. Negotiate with customers, matters of considerable significance that may impact current and future business. Design and develop complex models or simulations of systems and conduct independent studies and research encompassing sophisticated analytical techniques and novel and unconventional approaches. Develop the relevant Commercial Engineering project deliverables, such as simulation results, component purchase specifications, drawings, bill of material, electrical diagrams, verification testing plans, test procedures, technical descriptions, instructions and product analysis etc. Take ownership to resolve large issues that come up in projects. Lead or participate on cross functional teams to ensure the continuous, on going improvement of methods, processes, productivity and quality, while reducing costs. Delegate participation on cross functional teams to others in the group according to their strengths and co-ordinate programs that cover multiple disciplines. Participate in product standardization reviews and proposals as required. Provide answers on interpretations of regulatory standards; such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories), IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission), NEC (National Electrical Code), NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) etc. Participate on regulatory steering committees as needed. Act as a mentor to other engineers to address and resolve inquiries and problems as well as train less experienced engineers. Act as the technical resource to address and resolve inquiries and problems related to drives and/or other related power conversion systems. Prepare specifications, BOM (bills of material) and related documents in accordance with requirements, established formats and general instructions. Plan conduct or coordinate engineering analyses and tests, and prepare related reports and summaries, for review. Participate in the investigation of technical problems and the establishment of procedures and corrective actions to avoid recurrences. Your background Bachelor's degree, in engineering, and 8 years' experience in design, product development, product management, R (Research and Development), VFD - drives products, OR Associates' Degree, preferably in a technical field, and 10 years' experience in design, product development, product management, R, VFD - drives products. Masters' Degree is highly preferred. Candidates must already have a work authorization that allows them to work for ABB in the United States. Open to travel about 15%. Require Proficiency with Industrial Control Panel Design. Proficiency in knowledge of manufacturing and assembly techniques used with Industrial Control Panels, leveraging UL508A. Proficiency in applying UL and IEC agency requirements to design and their related approval processes. Awareness of thermal requirements of electronic equipment. Prior experience in power conversion equipment electrical design. Performs both their own design tasks and can delegate or assist with other team members with their tasks. Prior experience in VFD panel design. Proficiency with UL508A, 61800-5-1 and IEC 61800-5-1, NFPA 70E. Experience in Project Management of product design activities. Proficiency with AutoCAD. Experience in SAP. Proficiency in Microsoft Automation tools. Maintain technical competency and remain current in changes in the industry. Practice strict compliance with all safety rules whenever working on energized electrical equipment and help enforce such safety standards with others who may be involved in work on such energized equipment.
