Position Information

OVERVIEW: Bismarck State College is dedicated to student success. This on campus position is student-centered to provide high quality campus services and hands-on learning experiences.

Is directly accountable and responsible to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
  1. Responsible for providing leadership in planning, implementing, and managing service programs to include the areas of Career, Advising, and Counseling Services.


  1. Responsible for the supervision, training, evaluation, and performance of reporting staff.


  1. Responsible for advising the Vice President for Student Affairs and assisting in preparation of the budget for the Mystic Advising and Counseling Center (MACC).


Benefits

Position Description & Details

  1. Provides leadership in the advising and personal/crisis counseling function and the development of appropriate materials to assist in those functions.


  1. Provides individual and group career and vocational counseling for students.


  1. Serves as a liaison between the College, its students, and potential employers regarding career opportunities.


  1. Conducts program specific job search workshops; electronic job search, interviewing, resume and cover letter workshops.


  1. Develops a network with faculty and staff to provide information to students on counseling and career services through classroom presentations, school newspaper articles and advertisements.


  1. Researches, collects data, and prepares appropriate reports and records as needed for advising, counseling, and career services.


  1. Assesses effectiveness of Career, Advising, and Counseling, Services.


  1. Markets career-technical graduates/programs to relevant industries and employers.


  1. Hires, supervises, and evaluates reporting staff.


  1. Facilitates professional growth through participation in appropriate organizations and conferences.


  1. Chairs the Student of Concern Committee.


  1. Serves as a member of NDUS committees and Consortiums, and other campus committees and professional organizations as needed.


  1. Serves in a BSC Title IX team.


  1. Promotes innovation, creativity, and ideas to improve/enhance processes, functions, etc. in the department and as a whole for the college while focusing on innovation at a flat level and fostering a culture of no fear for innovative practices whether implemented or not.


  1. Analyzes student's career paths, initiate career assessments and inventories, and provides advice.


  1. Collaborates with departments to create efficient processes and procedures to help students gain employment opportunities on and off campus.

  1. Performs other duties as assigned or required.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises five benefited positions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Continuously - 66-100% - Use hands dexterously, talk or hear.
  • Frequently - 34-65% - Stand, walk, or sit, reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally - 1-33% - Stoop/kneel/crouch or crawl, climb or balance, or lift up to 25 pounds.


Minimum Requirements

  1. Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Business, Counseling or Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field and three years' experience in a supervisory position.


  1. Ability to interpret statistical, analytical reports and data.


  1. Good verbal and written communication skills.


  1. Ability to work cooperatively with diverse groups.


  1. Good working knowledge of computer software programs (i.e., electronic job search and resume preparation, online career guidance systems, Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, etc., Outlook email and calendar), strong internet familiarity and good keyboarding skills.


  1. ND Vocational Guidance certification or ability to obtain certification within one year.

    1. Experience in a comparable position in a community college setting.
    1. Knowledge of employment job seeking programs.
