Description

The American Indian Student Engagement Coordinator coordinates, develops and implements programs, practices and initiatives that enhance the presence and success of American Indian students at the University of North Dakota. Reporting to the Director of Student Diversity & Inclusion, housed in Student Affairs and Diversity, the Coordinator helps guide the development and implementation of an engagement plan for enhancing the success of American Indian students.

Duties & Responsibilities

Enriching American Indian students' educational experience by enhancing their academic and personal success at the University

  • Creating cultural, academic, and social support and development opportunities
  • Providing advice and guidance to students and student groups and enlisting assistance from other departments and staff to assist in the academic and personal success of students
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor to American Indian students, particularly those students majoring in STEM related fields
  • Working collaboratively with other University staff on issues related to American Indian students and other diverse populations
  • Serving as American Indian resource and liaison to students, faculty, and staff
  • Increasing awareness and understanding of the needs, issues, and concerns of American Indian students

Advocating for students in support of recruitment and retention of a diverse students

  • Assisting, when appropriate, with outreach activities to transfer students from Tribal Colleges in North Dakota
  • Advising key areas on programming and initiatives that are designed to help improve outreach to and retention and graduation rates of American Indian students or otherwise relate to and/or impact American Indian students and communities
  • Representing, as appropriate, the University of North Dakota at regional, tribal, and national events that involve issues important to American Indian education
  • Use assessment data to identify and implement programs to enhance students’ University experience, retention, and overall learning
  • Uses Starfish to monitor student population’s academic performance and follows-up with appropriate support
  • Identifies obstacles to students’ academic progress and develops initiatives to counter those obstacles
  • Provides follow-up support services to students in the areas of financial aid, academic advising, transition support, etc.

Managing the American Indian Center including overseeing operations and coordination of events and activities

  • Planning and overseeing programs and services offered by Student Diversity & Inclusion to support and advance the experience of American Indian students
  • Develop and manage assessment initiatives for programs and event
  • Providing general building management for the American Indian Center space and operations
  • Maintaining a welcoming, safe, and inclusive environment for building occupants and visitors

Participate as an active staff member of the Division of Student Affairs & Diversity

  • Maintains positive and professional relationships with students and colleagues
  • Creates a positive and open environment which enhances diversity and supports inclusiveness for all students
  • Communicates effectively with a diverse community of students, staff, faculty, etc.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with others
  • Handles difficult situations with tact and diplomacy
  • Serves as a professional representative of the department, division and university on committees, at events and at conferences and professional activities
  • Gathers and reports accurate information as requested
  • Maintains awareness of, applies and follows institutional policies
  • Maintains professional knowledge required of the position
  • Attends and engages in professional development conferences, trainings and events
  • Creates and sustains a work environment based on ethics, integrity, trust, and accountability
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Competencies

  • Awareness of the issues and concerns of marginalized and underrepresented students on a college campus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to advocate on behalf of underrepresented and/or marginalized students.
  • Ability to develop and facilitate programs, presentations, and other educational materials.
  • Experience establishing successful professional relationships with others
  • Demonstrated ability to develop professional working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 2 Years' experience in, and an ongoing commitment to working effectively with and across diverse communities including American Indian/Native Americans, people of color, underrepresented groups, and new immigrant populations; people with both visible and invisible disabilities; women; people of various gender and sexual identities and expressions; and first-generation students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Experience with tribal protocols, cultures, histories, sovereignty and governmental relations, particularly for Midwest tribes, but also for American Indian communities as a whole
  • Experience in supporting college access and success of American Indian students
  • Experience in American Indian student programs
  • Experience in bringing American Indian students together into a sense of community, respect, and mutual support
  • Experience with the academic retention, transition, cultural and career concerns of American Indian students, their families, and communities
  • Experience with tribal education programs, scholarship programs and other academic programs
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous reservation/community-based employment experience with a federally recognized American Indian tribal government, with additional preference for such employment being with a Native Nation in North Dakota
  • Experience communicating across cultural lines to include interpretation of policy between tribal, state, and federal governments and university leadership
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing student success metrics
  • Tribal community membership

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$52,000/annual, Full-Time, Benefited, Exempt

Work Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
