Position Description & Details:

North Dakota State University's Department of Plant Science invites applications for a Research Scientist position with a focus on oat breeding and genetics to improve agro-morphological characteristics, grain quality, and rust resistance in oats using both conventional and molecular breeding approaches.

Research priorities for this position will focus on cultivar development and to incorporate new sources of improved grain quality into breeding lines.

The successful candidate will be expected to b uild and coordinate research collaborations with national and international academic and research institutes, specifically with oat global research network. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Maintain a strong program of research on improving oat development, rust resistance, and grain quality and to incorporate these improvements into breeding lines.
  • Provide critical training and support to postdoctoral research fellows and advise graduate students, undergraduate students, and student interns.
  • Write competitive research grants, monitor research activities and progress, and compile reports of the funded projects. Write original research for publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Collect data, interpret results, formulate conclusions and document findings in written reports and publish in professional journals. Analyze and publish research data in peer-reviewed journals and present information at scientific conferences.
  • Prepare and present posters and presentations to students, growers and professionals at scientific and other meetings.
  • Build and coordinate research collaborations with national and international academic and research institutions, specifically with oat global research networks.

Advertised Salary: $52,000+

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate (PhD) from an accredited institution in plant cytogenetics/genomics or closely related discipline .
  • The selected individual must have a strong foundation and knowledge of plant cytogenetics and genomics.
  • Experience in plant breeding methods using both conventional and molecular breeding approaches.
  • Research experience in molecular cytogenetics and chromosome engineering.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills, ability to work closely with others in a multicultural environment.
  • Familiarity with SAS.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of postdoctoral research experience in plant plant molecular cytogenetic research.
  • Experience in plant mapping population development, phenotyping, and genotyping using high-throughput technologies.
  • Ability to adapt AGROBASE to data management.
