Description

Position located in the new Student Memorial Union.

To supervise, organize, set up, and take down of catered events. Provide solid leadership to catering support staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work catered events.  Examples are: special occasions, receptions, refreshments hours, breakfasts, luncheons, dinners, full-course menus, buffets working luncheons, picnic/cook outs, mock tail bars, and conference needs. 
  • Set up special requirements for the events.  Examples are: ice sculpture displays; buffet tables with mirror cubes and display units; special tables – serpentine tables etc.; special decorations; color coordination of table linens and table skirting; a variety of napkin folds; beverage fountains; table settings; tents and fountains; table settings with china, crystal, and silverware for served meals; New York chafers and buffet equipment; and dessert table arrangement. 
  • Serve functions-buffet style, full-course, reception, informal function and self-service. 
  • Assist with other special arrangements such as place cards; bead tables, reserved sections, special ordered meals such as low fat or vegetarian, cake cutters, and punch or coffee services. 
  • Know the facilities- the meeting rooms in UND Campus.  Familiarize self with other meeting areas such as the law building, Chester Fritz Auditorium, Gorecki Alumni Center etc. 
  • Make decision on the timing for set up and deliverance of production.
  • Oversee/work catered events as follows: Review the scheduled events for the day with supervisor, Organize the materials, food and equipment needed for these events and pack totes if needed for outside events, transport items to event sites, set up functions according to catering agreements, serve events according to the event agreements, leave even facility according to directives, transport all food, materials and equipment back to designated production sites and store these items
  • Adhere to grooming and appearance standards
  • Maintain positive guest relations at all times.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Provide exceptional customer service to our guests
  • Help with dish washing when assigned; communicate guest counts, incomplete events, and concerns to supervisor. 
  • Maintain & organize banquet kitchen at the end of the shift
  • Practice sanitation and safety policies
  • Report any equipment repairs to catering manager
  • Attend Catering staff meetings.
  • Train/supervise student and part-time staff as assigned
  • Burnishes and polish all silver as required 
  • Maintain cleanliness of catering vehicles and delivery equip
  • Works with the preparation and disposal of fish, poultry, beef, lamb, pork and other meat products
  • Adheres to all safety and sanitation policies which includes removal of all jewelry and piercings (plain wedding band is permissible) and wearing hair and beard restraints

Required Competencies

  • The ability to uphold/portray a professional department image and standards     
  • Proven customer service skills, as well as excellent organizational and interpersonal skills    
  • Able to stand/walk 4 to 5 hours at a time and able to move 35 - 50 pounds.
  • Self-motivated and able to solve problems independently and requires little supervision
  • Excellent customer relations skills, creativity, and positive attitude.
  • Good organization skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse and sophisticated clientele
  • Is creative and can present food and functions artistically
  • Able to work most shifts in the afternoon and evening

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One year of supervisory experience
  • One year of customer service experience
  • Availability for flexible schedule to include weekends and evenings
  • Successful completion of a criminal history records check

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of catering and food service experience
  • Experience and knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used at catered functions
  • Progressive supervisory experience
  • NRA ServSafe Certified

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$14.75/hour, Full-Time, Benefited, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule/Start Date

Variable hours depending on scheduled events which include evenings and weekends.
