Position Information

Position Description & Details:

A full-time Research Specialist position is available in the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University, Fargo. The successful candidate will implement and carry out research projects generally designed and formulated by the project leader in the Woody Plant Physiology/Biotechnology program with one Experiment Station project and several outside funded projects; to manage the research facilities including lab, greenhouse, and field plots and to develop and help modify specific techniques, procedures and methodologies used in various research projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. degree in plant sciences, horticulture and forestry or related field plus at least two years experience in plant physiology, plant molecular biology and biotechnology
• Experience with running and maintaining laboratory, greenhouse and field equipment
• Computer skills for record keeping (Word) and data organization (Excel, SAS)
• Ability to conduct applied and basic research in the field, laboratory, and greenhouse
• Excellent interpersonal skills and able to work with others in a multicultural environment
• Effective English oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
• Valid U.S. driver's license
• ND Certified Pesticide Applicators License, or ability to become certified

Preferred Qualifications:

• Earned M.S. degree in plant sciences, horticulture and forestry or related field
• Supervisory experience
• Knowledge of woody plant propagation
• Experience in plant tissue culture
• Experience managing plant growth in field and greenhouse
• Germplasm development
• Knowledge of safety procedures used while working and disposing of reagents used in the lab and greenhouse

Physical Demands:

• Physically able to perform laboratory, field and greenhouse research, kneeling and lifting up to 25 lbs.
• Work outside in occasionally challenging weather conditions (heat or cold)
• Work longer hours than 40/hr per week when seasonally necessary
• Working with high voltage, radioactivity, chemical mutagens, carcinogens and flammables

Salary: $45,000+/yr
