Position Information

The College of Science and Mathematics invites applications for the role of Associate Chair in the Department of Biological Sciences. The position begins July 1, 2021 with the expectation that, with satisfactory performance, the associate chair will assume the role of Department Chair on July 1, 2022. The duration of the chair appointment will be negotiated with the Dean, as will the balance of activity in teaching, research, service and administration. Those interested in the position should prepare a curriculum vitae and written statements of their leadership philosophy and goals as Chair. These statements will be shared with the department. The candidate should be prepared to meet with the department for a discussion of their statements and answer questions.     Position Description for Associate Chair, Department of Biological Sciences

    Effort: Annual appointment 40% teaching; 40% research; 10% service; 10% Administration.

    Administration: Administrative duties as associate chair of the department are primarily coordination of the curriculum for the department. This includes submitting the fall and spring semester schedules, assisting faculty with new course proposals and helping with the new Biological Sciences curriculum. Other duties may be assigned by the chair as needed.

    Effort: Annual appointment 15% teaching; 40% research; 45% administration

    Administration: Administrative responsibilities of the chair include:
      • Overseeing the day-to-day running of the department
      • Managing the departmental budget
      • Setting the agenda for departmental meetings
      • Providing administrative support for the department's research and teaching programs
      • Organizing the curriculum and overseeing its effectiveness
      • Coordinating the hiring, evaluating and mentoring of faculty
      • Acting as an effective liaison to the Dean for the College of Science and Mathematics
      • Providing recommendations for pay raises
      • Overseeing submission for reports to upper administration
      • Acting as an effective liaison for facilities and space issues
      • Providing strong representation of the department at the College, University and Community levels
      • Organizing new student orientation and maintaining high quality student advising
      • Managing student issues
      • Assigning service activities at the department, college and university levels
      • Ensuring a strong web presence
      • Maintaining connectivity with the Biological Sciences alumni and friends of the department
      • Assisting the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics with development
      • Working toward maintaining a diverse faculty and student body
      • Providing assistance to the Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics as requested
