Top 3 things you are looking for in a candidates experience:

1. Hands-on experience with developing and analyzing mechanical engineering tests

2. Either fluid mechanics OR fatigue experience

3. Experience with experimental evaluation of medical devices

Education Required: Mechanical Engineering degree or closely related (application / supplier should justify if different)

Years Experience Required: 4 if BS, 2 if advanced degree

Will the contractor be working 40 hours a week? If not, weekly estimate? Yes, 40

Does this position require the candidate to be onsite or remote? Must be onsite

Develop, execute and analyze mechanical lab experiments on biomedical devices in the Cardiac Rhythm Management business, at the Mounds View, Minnesota campus. Areas of focus include fluid/solid interactions in ventricular assist devices, fatigue performance of implantable cardiac pacemaker and defibrillator systems, and mechanical characterization of atrial fibrillation catheters.

Experiments range from basic mechanical properties and behavior (stress / strain / flow / pressure) to validation of clinical performance in bench and animal setting. The work will involve designing and deploying custom test equipment as well as using standard engineering lab tools. Project phases may span conceptual research to product development to post-market field support.

Required skills and education

  • BS in mechanical engineering or a closely associated field with at least 4 years relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.
  • A general background in fluid mechanics and/or solid mechanics, able to relate fundamental principles to clinical performance of devices.
  • Ability to work and contribute in a collaborative team environment where work direction may come from more than one person. Ability to work on more than one project at a time and assess the priority of each project with limited guidance.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills including technical report writing documenting laboratory experiments with summarized and detailed results.
  • Apply appropriate statistical methods to analyze data and draw conclusions. Understand the nature and influence of noise on data and data-based conclusions.
  • Design and documentation of simple jigs and fixtures. Collaborate with fabrication groups on appropriate designs and materials.
  • Familiarity with operation and use of lab electronics and diagnostic equipment (meters, scopes, power supplies, signal analyzers, load cells, pressure and flow meters, computers for instrument control and data acquisition, etc.)
  • Ability to establish and maintain a safe work environment. Ability to assess whether newly developed or evolving lab tests or devices can meet standard safety requirements.

Desired skills and education

  • Experience with thin film lubrication flows
  • Background and understanding the basics of vibration and vibration analysis
  • Ability to design and run computer-controlled instrumentation using LabVIEW
  • Experience with Monte Carlo simulations using R
  • Familiarity with the basics of biomedical device applications and use
  • Experience with an industry-standard 3D solid modeling program
  • Validation of models for computational fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and/or structural analysis

Other requirements

  • Work in a lab at a bench, either sitting or standing for extended periods of time, as well as in an office environment
