Job Summary

The Project Engineering Manager will provide exceptional customer service to our internal and external customers by coordinating all activities associated within the engineering division. This will include all activities related to effectively managing the daily priorities of the department as well as overall project management responsibility from Prebid to project closeout. The ideal candidate will:
  • Plan and direct the day-to- day activities for the engineering team members.
  • Ensures engineering team activity is customer focused, results orientated, performance driven and in compliance with all applicable internal and external requirements.
  • Manages the development, implementation, and evaluation of small to complex projects.
  • Oversees projects to ensure completion of projects as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Evaluates and recommends to CEO changes that substantially impact the scope, budget, or schedule of a project.
  • Monitors progress and performance against the project plan.
  • Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. Provide input into developing the budget.
  • Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.
  • Preparing, scheduling, coordinating and monitoring the assigned engineering projects
  • Monitoring compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Interacting daily with the clients to interpret their needs and requirements and representing them in the field.
  • Research, cultivate and assist in securing new projects for the division.
Project Management Responsibilities:
  • Will be assigned key projects to manage which includes the planning, scheduling, and controlling activities to fulfill identified deliverables.
  • Provide the leadership to coordinate the efforts of the team and to make decisions to successfully complete projects on time, within scope, managing sub-contractors, schedules, costs, margins and customer expectations to satisfy project requirements.
  • Prepares detailed project schedules, including identification of major milestones, for overseeing, controlling, communicating and managing all activities required to complete projects.
  • Need to manage projects to maintain and/or improve project profit margin.
  • Communicate with CEO/Director of Engineering/Bookkeeper to ensure timely invoicing and payment where applicable.
  • May need to travel to new project location to assist with startup or close out.
  • Able to perform general engineering calculations including structural, HVAC and electrical.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the customer for all project communications during the duration of the project.
  • Develop work plan, schedules, and logistics, and organize deliveries based on overall project parameters, project schedule and scope, and customer goals.
  • Maintain detailed project documentation of key project decisions and customer/project requests/revisions.
  • Provide timely and formal written communication throughout projects and disseminate all critical information to executive leadership, contract officers, and staff.
  • Create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.
  • Deliver projects on time, specifications and budgets, coordinate cross-functional project teams through the whole project cycle. As such lead and coordinate project meetings and reviews.
  • Minimize our exposure and risk on projects.
  • Conduct start up meetings, document preparation with required parties or new hires, develop and resolve open issues/punch list, and complete project close out documentation.
  • Assist in establishing costs and producing professional, accurate quotations that protect the profit margin.
  • Manages project hours to budgeted hours to ensure project profitability. Manage project hours to ensure profitability.
  • Track project performance, specifically to analyze the successful completion of short and long- term goals.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Drive the technical aspects of all projects including establishing data points needed for measuring success, reading/writing technical specs, and estimating time and resources needed for project completion.
  • Excellent client communication and negotiation skills.
  • Proven ability to integrate frequent changes in scope into project planning.
  • Experience with process improvement
  • Knowledge of engineering and commercial construction industry.
  • Ability to read blueprints, conduct field verifications.
  • Very good project estimation and budget management skills.
  • Must be extremely organized, with good time management skills and the ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
  • Must be able to analyze and problem solve, even with significant ambiguity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Ability to negotiate deliverables in a favorable fashion for Project Solutions.
  • Strong skill set working with teams of varying degrees of experience/competency.
  • Experience in working independently and closely in a team environment.
  • Work closely with the Project Solutions staff for the flawless execution of projects.
  • Establish goals and be able to prioritize requirements for all projects.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Be aware of all active engineering projects (present and under consideration) within the company and be able to document all objectives, line out action items and communicate clearly to all team members within Project Solutions.
  • Schedule and prepare meetings with respective stakeholders, ensuring that projects happen on-time
Educational/Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Structural or Civil Engineering is required. PE, ME or MBA is a plus but not required for consideration for this position.
  • Minimum 8-10 years' experience working in a technical fast paced environment working with Engineers or within the general contracting or construction management industries.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Expert knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Project.
  • Proven ability to consistently meet or exceed deadline expectations.
  • Team player who thrives on collaborating with others to produce proposals.
  • Comfortable in the dynamic atmosphere of a technical organization with a rapidly expanding customer base.
  • Excellent technical aptitude, analytical and detail oriented.
  • Technical ability to learn a diverse product line.
  • Adherence to Contract management protocols.
  • PMP/PMI Certification highly preferred
  • OSHA 30 preferred
Working Environment

Regularly works with others face to face, over the phone and through email. Generally, works in an office environment with moderate noise. Nature of work may require working outside of regular business hours as project needs require. Periodically works outside and may work around moving objects, dust and dirt. Work is based in Rapid City office but projects may require overnight travel at company expense.
