Job Summary
The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) performs admission/discharge folders and ensures that all necessary forms are available. The HUC assists with answering telephone calls and messages at nurse's station and assists with transportation needs based on facility location.
Essential Job Functions
Functions as the nursing uni receptionist to patients, families, external customers, internal customers, and staff. Functions as the customer service associate for the nursing unit. Assists to meet the patients and family needs. Completes service recovery and follow up. Advises charge nurses, Supervisors or Manager of unsatisfactory outcomes and patient concerns
Completes physician order processing and communicates orders to the nurse and ancillary departments. Identifies and communicates patient issues to the nurse or identified caregiver. Ensures distribution of communication as assigned/requested, i.e., interdepartmental faxes, requests to post, mail, etc.
Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to manage the nurse call system by answering call lights courteously and relaying information according to priority.
Triages customer calls and requests by notifying the appropriate staff member. Maintains excellent telephone etiquette.
Facilitates department flow. Performs chart completion and ensures that all necessary chart forms are available. Maintains paper chart forms and prepares forms for entry into electronic medical record. Completes charge entry, charge review, lost charge tracking and patient account maintenance.
Completes data entry in a timely manner and obtains, maintains, and completes all computer reports.
Receives and directs all patients, visitors, and professionals ensuring that their needs are met in a courteous and timely manner.
Performs transfer and discharge procedures and manages patient prescription printing. Assists nursing staff in compiling patient education materials. Schedules patient post-hospital appointments.
Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
