Responsible for the design, development, management or sunsetting of new, existing or acquisition products. Reviews product performance against expectations and facilitates or influences changes to product portfolio to improve competitive position and optimal product performance. May work with internal or external business constituents to determine product future direction or respond to product inquiries. May be project-based and involve working within multiple product functions.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Overall product and solution ownership, development and management for Advocacy and related capabilities, including Plan Advisor, +CareConnect, +Provider and GenerationYou
  • Serves as lead and manager for team of highly motivated and skilled direct reports
  • Participation in strategic direction determination and competitive market reconnaissance
  • Partnership with broader UHG / UHC product leadership and alignment with enterprise vision for advocacy as a solution
  • Reviews whole solution portfolio and considers if products are still relevant based on business and market strategy; Makes recommendations and/or decisions on whether to maintain, invest, or end of life based on assessment
  • Analyzes data from KPIs and recommends appropriate actions; May direct others in data and metric requirements
  • Explains competitive landscape and how product fits into it; Owns product holistically; Anticipates what is happening in the market and plans and executes on insights learned; Translates data into a compelling business case and customer story
  • Uses creative thinking to solve problems; Challenges current thinking
  • Works with matrix partners to translate required capabilities into concrete operational processes and measurement plans; Interprets vision and translates into requirements for engineering teams; Validates requirements with marketplace via pilots and beta groups; Pro-actively identifies needs / priorities of audience and provides relevant information when sharing insights, including facts and explanation of decision-making criteria
  • Tells the story of the product both internally and externally; Provides subject matter expertise; Joins sales team on calls to offer expertise

  • Able to work independently through each stage of the product lifecycle, building proficiency in developing and executing strategies based on market needs and profitability managing product(s); Manages a suite of products or has a singular focus on a more complex product

Market / Client and Customer Focus
  • Demonstrates understanding of methods to gather market insights and analyze competitive landscape through partnership with Market Research and/or direct participation in key activities; Interprets and use the analyses to inform and recommend product strategy across the product lifecycle
  • Defines user / buyer characteristics; Translates buyer needs and decision criteria into actionable plans; Contributes to sales channel strategy development that aligns with customer business rhythms and activities; Has awareness of internal budget cycles
  • Has awareness of methodology for determining product / solution sizing; Translates broad market sizing and current penetration to product plans
  • Observes customer interactions with product; Dialogues with stakeholders on implications and modifications; Accurately represents customer needs with internal stakeholders; and in related plans
Financial Knowledge and Acumen
  • Understands segments business practices and financial structures; Understands key profit and loss indicators; Links operational outcomes to financial outcomes; Reviews P&L and budget reports and interprets data including identification of both favorable and unfavorable variances, recommends and/or makes go/no go decisions; Articulates the financial impact and related risks to product; Prepares quality estimation with appropriate assumptions; Helps to evaluate other's forecasts and critically evaluates the information given
  • Identifies and accesses relevant data to build compelling business case in self-directed manner; Partners with finance to complete the cost / benefit analysis and track forecast to ensure the product is performing as expected
  • Identifies and assesses the impact of financial decisions; Translates assessment into capital request
Technical Knowledge and Development
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage technology to improve product capabilities; Shares learnings with others to influence change
  • Accurately translates technical terms and concepts to non-technical stakeholders; Effectively represents technical challenges and opportunities to external and internal stakeholders; Leverages insights to adjust timelines and resource allocation
  • Prioritizes roadmap and articulates a logical, iterative approach to delivering the customer solution; May serve as lead product manager in an Agile environment
Relationship Management
  • Proactively analyzes internal and external networks; Builds strategic relationships based on current and future business needs
  • Identifies potential issues and pro-actively develops mitigation plans; Assists in removing obstacles, resolves conflicts and ensures alignment
  • Uses an understanding of the complex relationships among organization's leaders to facilitate successful outcomes; Uses an awareness and understanding of the organization's environment and culture when recommending strategies and seeking buy-in / support
  • Uses an understanding of the organization's processes, systems and policies to facilitate successful outcomes; Influences direction setting, facilitates decision making and resolves conflicts; Motivates stakeholders to support product vision and goals; Identifies success criteria and achieves consensus on strategies, requirements and roadmap
Specific Position Activities / Responsibilities
  • Active daily management of advocacy solutions in place with book of business clients
  • Support and strategic execution for new advocacy solution build and development efforts
  • Active product vision and execution leadership for the GenerationYOU solution, new to UMR with first effective dates in 2021 / 2022
  • Solution tracking, reporting and analytical review of in force advocacy solutions, including GenerationYOU
  • Strategic support for expanding use of advocacy dashboard solution, including due diligence and innovation around new user roles (internal and external) and the security protocols required
  • Consultative support for plan design modeling and partnership with incentive solutions team in recommending reward amounts and currencies to be used within the GenerationYOU program
  • Strategic support for custom advocacy solution designs required by large national account groups that require unique configuration and implementation of existing and new programs
  • Active observation, relationship and performance management for internal and external vendors providing supplementary or core services embedded within UMR advocacy solutions
  • Continued awareness and strategic application of competitive intelligence and reconnaissance around third party advocacy solution providers

Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree and related industry or product management experience
  • 3+ years of product management experience
  • Experience translating product decisions into financial impact
  • Proven track record with product and solution management and development
  • Ability to think strategically and execute tactically across a dynamic set of corporate goals and objectives
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently identify problems, find root cause(s), develop solution alternatives and drive resolution
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Agile methodologies
  • Experience within the self-funded or fully insured health plan industry
  • Proven prioritization skills
  • Proven track record working effectively in a highly fluid environment
  • Ability to work across functional teams and develop valuable cross-departmental partnerships
  • Ability to lead team in a virtual environment
  • Proven project, time and resource management skills
