Position Information

A MS graduate student position is available in Dr. Samat Amat's lab in the Department of Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University (NDSU). The thesis research projects will be conducted in collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Animal Sciences in one of the following topics: 1) understanding the role of maternal microbiome in fetal and offspring development in cattle; 2) harnessing the reproductive tract microbiota to enhance fertility; 3) developing antimicrobial alternative strategies (e.g. bacteriophage, essential oil, and microbiota transplantation) to mitigate bovine respiratory disease and/or liver abscesses in feedlot cattle.
The ideal candidates will be passionate about livestock industry and microbiology and have a desire to make contribution to the livestock industry by developing microbiome-based strategies to mitigate challenges (e.g. antimicrobial resistance) facing the livestock industry. The candidates who have background in animal or veterinary science, and microbiology with previous experience in bioinformatic analysis including amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing are highly encouraged to apply. Experience with North American cattle industry would be advantageous.
The successful candidates will receive competitive stipends and tuition waiver and can start their graduate programs in Winter 2022 or immediately.

Assistantship appointments may vary in length and are contingent upon the availability of funding. Terms on duties and responsibilities will be provided on the graduate assistantship contract.
  • Students must be registered for graduate credit each semester (fall and spring) they receive an assistantship and must be in good academic standing and maintaining satisfactory progress toward their degree. In addition, international students must maintain the appropriate residency status.
  • Teaching assistants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency (refer to section titled "English Language Proficiency Procedures for Graduate Teaching Assistants").
  • Students offered a graduate teaching or graduate service assistantship must consent to a criminal background check. This includes graduate researchers teaching in a lab.
  • Students placed on Academic Warning may retain their assistantship. Students placed on Probation may no longer receive an assistantship.
  • Required annual training must be completed within 30 days of start date and yearly thereafter.
