The Position

Wells Fargo's Retail mortgage origination business has a proven track record of success serving customers and clients in a dynamic, competitive and rapidly evolving industry and we are looking for a transformational leader to take the business to the next level.
The Head of Underwriting and Credit Risk is accountable for leading the largest, most talented Home Mortgage Underwriters and Credit Risk team in the mortgage industry. The executive will be relied upon to work seamlessly and collaborate in a highly effective way across the Wells Fargo enterprise to develop and implement strategies that transform the overall customer experience and lead the market while effectively managing credit risk.
The fast-paced position will be accountable for achieving growth and profit goals, balancing quality and cost, maximizing market share and transforming the business model. The ideal candidate will accelerate innovation and strengthen the risk and control environment while supporting and enabling the talented team to thrive. Strategic priorities include: improving the customer origination experience in a manner that creates a durable competitive advantage for Wells Fargo, earning a significantly greater share of our Wells Fargo customer's business through development, implementation and execution of a unified consumer strategy while competing effectively in the broad home mortgage market and winning new customers for Wells Fargo.
The role must successfully integrate across Home Lending, Community Bank, Wealth and Investment Management and the Enterprise to effectively serve customers. Strategic and decisive leadership, effective collaboration, a proven track record of successfully leading large complex organizations and achieving growth with effective control will be determining factors in selection. The role will have among its principle responsibilities the following:
  • Strengthen and enhance the performance of Wells Fargo as the lender of choice in Retail Mortgage Origination as measured by Customer Loyalty, Net Customer Acquisition, Capture of Wells Fargo Enterprise Customers, Retention of Wells Fargo customers, and Market Share.
  • Demonstrate strategic thought leadership, and decisive accountable action to transform the sales strategy placing the customer at the center of every aspect of our business and keeping the total Wells Fargo experience in mind.
  • Support the advancement of strategies that evolve and grow the organization through digitization, data, technology advancements and online capabilities expansion. Capitalize on the combination of people plus technology to differentiate in the marketplace.
  • Advance service delivery to existing customer relationships, evolving customer segments and Enterprise customers through increased synergy and investments to drive customer experience and process innovation.
  • Provide strategic leadership to provide customers with a unified Consumer Strategy experience leveraging data, insights, and information across Wells Fargo keeping the customer's total experience in mind.
  • Manage key risks across the business such as market risk, credit risk, operations risk, compliance risk, regulatory and legal risk, as well as reputational risk - ability to think broadly and act decisively.
The Candidate
Strength of overall leadership and demonstrated balanced decision making will be the determining factor in selection. Successful candidates will be articulate and possess a demonstrated leadership capability; they will be impressive in their inter-personal effectiveness and with regard to their accomplishments. It requires a leader with strong relationship management, influencing, vision and execution skills. A key differentiator will be the ability to understand and operate successfully in a complex, heavily matrixed corporate environment. The role requires; a passion for serving Customers, a balanced approach of thoughtful deliberate direction setting executed with a sense of urgency, and passion for results and personal accountability for achievement.

Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years of lending experience
  • 10+ years of management experience
Other Desired Qualifications
A seasoned executive with increasing responsibility in mortgage, financial services, or allied industries in leadership positions with emphasis in the following areas: sales, operations, strategy, risk management and residential housing market.
  • Senior management experience leading large mortgage underwriting teams and broad distribution in a highly matrixed institution.
  • Demonstrated business strategic planning and execution leadership experience ensuring the organization, at all levels, and is aligned with the vision and objectives.
  • Proven success achieving objectives requiring a high level of engagement and cooperation from people in other parts of the organization.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytic capabilities utilized to identify root cause improvement opportunities, as well as designing approaches/programs to address those issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present complex ideas in a straightforward and understandable manner.
  • Strong partnership/collaboration skills.
Base salary range for this role is:
Min: $198,000 Mid: $284,000 Max: $369,200
Compensation package may include a discretionary bonus, Restricted Share Rights, or other long-term incentives.

Job Expectations
  • This position requires compliance with all mortgage regulatory requirements and Wells Fargo's compliance policies related to these requirements including acceptable background check investigation results. Successful candidates must also meet ongoing regulatory requirements including additional screening and required reporting of certain incidents.
