The University of North Dakota Department of Athletics is currently recruiting for an Assistant Coach – Track & Field / Cross Country.  The primary function of this position is to assist the Head Women’s and Men’s Track & Field and Cross-Country Coach with all aspects of a Division I program.  Must have a commitment to compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes. This position provides comprehensive assistance to the Athletics Department in the area of providing comprehensive instruction to the team. This position will provide instruction to the team that includes teaching proper skills and techniques, teaching basic physical health concepts to include nutritional education, teaching team and individual leadership concepts/skills as well as providing general safety instruction.

The purpose of UND Athletics is to initiate, stimulate, and improve the athletics program for student-athletes to promote and develop their education, leadership, physical fitness, athletic excellence, and provide opportunities for participation in a sport of choice.  Its competitive athletics program is designed to be a vital part of the University of North Dakota’s education system by stressing the importance of each student-athlete being and active part of the student body while making satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate degree.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide general safety instruction for all activities in which the team and/or individuals participate.  Specifically instruct student-athletes on safe training and exercise techniques. Assist with monitoring practice sessions. Assist/run practices under the direction of the Head Coach. Assist strength coach for weightlifting & conditioning practices, as needed. Provide instruction related to team and leadership concepts/skills specific to assigned player groups and individuals. Assist with all facets of coaching at all UND meets and practices. Serve as a role model and demonstrate a professional working relationship with student-athletes. Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety, and physical & mental well-being of the student-athletes. Recruit quality prospective student-athletes for the program. Handle day-to-day correspondence, both email and print mail, as assigned. Handle weekly telephone calls, as assigned. Coordinate official and unofficial campus visits, as assigned. Handle documentation for each prospective student athlete in accordance with NCAA and UND Athletics Department compliance protocols/rules. Follow all NCAA, conference, UND rules and regulations. Assist with statistics at all UND game and practices. Assist with team travel and/or scouting as assigned. Assist with social media for the program, when applicable. Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department and fundraising activities, as assigned. Assist with maintaining contact with alumni and boosters, as assigned. Assist with all aspects of camps/clinics, as assigned. Follow all university hiring procedures, as assigned. Prepare Job Data Hire forms for each camp coach/counselor, monitor/approve all hourly timesheets, if applicable. Other duties as assigned by Head Coach.

Required Competencies

  • Mush have effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administration, alumni, and general public. Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and computer skills. Ability to multi-task, organize, and prioritize. Ability to teach and work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Must have commitment to NCAA compliance and follow all NCAA, conference, and UND rules & regulations. Must have commitment to academic success of student-athletes. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes including having a valid driver’s license.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree. Two (2) years or more experience as a distance coach. Successful completion of a criminal history background check. Valid Driver’s License

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.  This position does not support visa sponsorship for continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years or more experience as a full-time distance coach at the NCAA Division I, II, or III level. Four (4) years NCAA Division I, II, or III athletic experience as a distance athlete. Experience with administrative tasks including but not limited to: recruiting, travel, and meet administration.

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

Starting Salary of $31,950/year.  Full-time, Benefitted position.

Work Schedule/Start Date

Regular Work Schedule; work required for nights, weekends, and travel up to 25% for all home and away practices, competitions, recruiting, fundraising, and/or other athletic-related events.
