Summary:

The person in this position is responsible for producing engaging, relevant stories and/or visuals in a variety of formats on all relevant publishing platforms, with an emphasis on digital content and publishing for a statewide audience.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

● Contributing daily to Minnesota state legislative coverage during the session in St. Paul.

● Breaking news coverage, from the Twin Cities and surrounding areas, that would be of interest to our FCC communities, especially those in Minnesota.

● Other daily-turn stories of high news value and on a variety of topics for Minnesotans as well as border communities Fargo and Grand Forks.

● Identifying news trends or topics that are relevant and common across the state — especially for our FCC locations — that can be aggregated and shared for a statewide audience.

● Contribute to major/breaking news coverage for various FCC locations as required. This could be a combination of reporting and/or multimedia production.

● Following available audience data to identify high-interest issues — topics people are reading, sharing and searching for — and developing content around these topics for these targeted audiences.

● Contributing feature stories, profiles and/or enterprise stories for the Forum News Service network; a willingness to tell stories in a variety of formats.

● Developing sources and regular touchpoints in the region for developing unique story ideas.

● Embracing a creative, collaborative approach with other team members and with other FCC departments and locations; contributing to the overall advancement of digital content initiatives and product initiatives for the company.

● Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

● Writing experience for a newspaper, website, magazine or specialty publication is required.

● Experience using digital analytics and social media tools is preferred.

● Basic knowledge of video and photo editing is preferred.

● Some experience in proofreading or editing is preferred; AP Style knowledge is a plus.

● Journalism or communications degree is helpful, though equivalent experience will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.

● A strong sense of purpose and urgency for the news.

● Must be able to multitask and juggle many different projects in a fast-paced environment.

● Ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.

● Must be creative, hardworking and a self-starter.
