Position Description:
Purpose
The Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project Director leads the project and serves as a public interest/public
health leader on alcohol-related issues within Wisconsin. This individual must be able to work
collaboratively with a wide range of professionals and officials from diverse disciplinary backgrounds
and geographic areas, including law enforcement, municipal attorneys, elected officials. This position
will plan and execute independent continuing professional education and technical assistance on
related public health law, alcohol policy for Wisconsin municipalities, and local, state and nationwide
alcohol policy issues such as alcohol outlet density and enforcement of the minimum legal drinking
age.
Primary Functions
* 1. Direct the Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project, and serve as an alcohol policy resource for law enforcement, elected and appointed officials, community groups and coalitions. Responsible for the development and support of a Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Portfolio (a compilation of evidence-based policy and practices that reduce alcohol misuse modified to reflect Wisconsin's legal framework). The portfolio will include explanation of specific policies and practices, identified best practices and sample policies.
2. Serve as Principal Investigator on Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS). Prepare annual grant applications, mid-year reports and other reports as DHS or other organizations may require.
3. Coordinate work plans with DHS and the Comprehensive Injury Center to meet the alcohol-related goals of the Wisconsin State Health Plan for reducing excessive alcohol consumption.
4. Hire and supervise the Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project attorney, Project Assistants and, student Research Assistants conducting research into areas of the alcohol policy in Wisconsin including tends in alcohol consumption, municipal ordinances, state law and relevant court cases.
5. Prepare material for Institutional Review Board (IRB) review of research projects, as needed, into areas of alcohol policy; supervise research projects in compliance with federal and state law and the policies of partner agencies.
6. Prepare general commentaries on alcohol policy for the public and elected officials.
7. Be available broadly to speak and comment to media on general questions of alcohol policy.
8. Develop and conduct outreach activities to identify trends and developments in state, municipal and organizational alcohol policy including articles and columns as requested.
9. Partner with outside organizations and educational institutions on workshops and course development, research, data review and public dissemination of materials.
10. Develop and make presentations to a broad range of audiences on alcohol policy and related topics.
11. Provide technical assistance to law enforcement, municipalities, community coalitions and others on alcohol policy.
12. Participate on policy panels, subcommittees and working groups related to alcohol policy development at the state and local level.
13. Other duties as assigned or needed to fulfill the mission of Wisconsin Alcohol Policy Project.

Previous experience with alcohol-related public health law, municipal government and national alcohol policy issues preferred, but not
required. Previous experience in providing technical assistance on public health issues is preferred but not required.
