Do you want to be part of a global, growth-oriented company focused on creating a sustainable future for our planet through accelerating the adoption of higher efficiency and cleaner energy technologies?DNV's Markets and Risk group is seeking a Principal Building Simulation Engineer to join our Technology team to oversee projects in support of energy efficiency incentive programs and provide technical expertise for building simulation modeling. This position is an opportunity to use your building simulation experience to collaboratively solve problems, to manage complex projects, and contribute to the energy transition.

This position can either be remote from any location in the continental U.S. (except Colorado) or based out of any of our Energy North America offices: Arlington, VA; Madison, WI; Medford, MA; Middletown, CT; Portland, ME; Portland, OR; Oakland, CA; San Diego, CA. with relocation provided to Nashville, TN.

What You'll Do

  • Act as project manager, coordinating resources and personnel within the constraints of time and budget to achieve project goals
  • Provide technical support, including building simulation model (EnergyPlus) and other tool development (in Excel, Python, R, SAS, etc.) for engineering analyses, technical review of building energy models and custom measures
  • Perform whole-building comprehensive simulation analysis of residential, commercial, and industrial facilities to estimate energy consumption and identify energy conservation opportunities
  • Be responsible for strategic evaluation planning, coordination, and execution of measurement and verification (M&V) activities at the program and portfolio level
  • Perform third party review of complex energy efficiency measures, conduct quality assurance checks for technical analyses, and report writing
  • Present evaluation results or other technical work to stakeholders or at conferences

Position Qualifications

What is Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Architectural Engineering required; Associates degree will be considered only when paired with specialized building modeling experience
  • Minimum of 12 years of related professional work experience required
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in building simulation modeling (Energy Plus)
  • Knowledge of energy codes and standards (IECC, ASHRAE, etc.)
  • Experienced at performing whole-building comprehensive energy simulation analysis of commercial and industrial facilities
  • Understanding of component-level configuration of HVAC, and refrigeration systems; lighting technologies and controls, and building management systems
  • Ability to translate building construction documentation and sequences of operation into building simulation models
  • Proficiency with calibrating behavior of occupants in building simulation modeling beyond default assumptions
  • Experience in energy efficiency program implementation or energy related markets
  • Project management experience
  • Demonstrated consulting skills and/or business development experience
  • Positive team-oriented attitude and professional demeanor
  • An organized, detail-oriented approach and the ability to work collaboratively and independently
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness and ability to travel, up to 25% of the time
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to rent and drive a car and travel on public conveyances when required
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills

  • Matlab, Python, Ruby, R, SAS or equivalent programming proficiency
  • Experience with OpenStudio PAT, RubyGems
  • Project Management Professional (PMP), LEED Green Associate (LEED GA), Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
