North Dakota State University is a research intensive, land-grant university. The Department of Communication is part of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. NDSU has a student enrollment of more than 13,000.

The Department of Communication (https://www.ndsu.edu/communication/) is seeking outstanding applicants for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor of strategic communication position beginning August 2022. Our department is adding a new faculty member with a social scientific approach to studying strategic communication and prefers a candidate with a specific interest in health campaigns and integrated marketing communications. The current faculty members in our department are active researchers and the department prioritizes teaching effectiveness. The position will require teaching two courses per semester. The department also provides one semester of “research by assignment” with no classes during the probationary period so that new faculty members can develop their research stream. The Department of Communication enrolls approximately 300 undergraduate students and 40 graduate students. We offer four undergraduate majors including agricultural communication, journalism, management communication, and strategic communication. Our department offers bachelor's degrees, a master's degree and a Ph.D. Strategic communication course offerings include but are not limited to principles of strategic communication, research methods for strategic communication, media analysis and planning, advertising creative strategies, health campaigns, advertising campaigns, public relations campaigns, case studies in public relations, specialty writing, media writing, and health communication courses. The department is home to a variety of student organizations including PRSSA, AD Club, The Spectrum newspaper, and a student radio (KNDS) and television station (BIN). In addition, departmental faculty are encouraged to teach and/or develop courses in their specialty areas for the graduate program and advise graduate students.

Position Description & Details:

The Department of Communication is seeking a student-centered faculty member to conduct social scientific research in strategic communication with a focus on health campaigns. The new faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses in strategic communication and health communication campaigns, contributing to the strategic communication major, advising graduate and undergraduate students, contributing to the graduate program's curriculum, and conducting service at the departmental, college, and university-level. Service to the industry and academic community is also valued. The position is a nine-month full-time faculty position. New faculty members:
  • have a 2/2 teaching opportunity with one semester of no classes during the probationary period.
  • can propose new classes and develop areas in strategic communication and health.
  • receive support for travel to deliver refereed conference papers and to develop a research program; and
  • may have a leadership role in the development of a health communication curriculum focusing on strategic communication and health campaigns.

Responsibilities:
  • Teaching courses in strategic communication and health communication campaigns.
  • Contributing to the strategic communication major.
  • Advising graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Contributing to the graduate program's curriculum.
  • Conducting service at the departmental, college, and university-level. Service to the industry and academic community is also valued.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Will have a Ph.D. in communication or related field by August 15, 2022.
  • Experience in strategic communication.
  • Teaching experience with good evaluations as the teacher of record.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completed Ph.D. in a strategic communication or related field.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in strategic communication or health related field.
  • Outstanding professional portfolio of academic research and industry practice.
  • Evidence of ability to teach a variety of courses in health campaigns and across the strategic communication (advertising and public relations) curriculum, both undergraduate and graduate. An ability to teach media planning and analytics is desirable.
  • Ability to serve as liaison with the industry and community organizations, especially those who have industry experience and can offer connections between the teaching and practice of strategic and health communication.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to contribute to the diversification of our faculty and foster an inclusive climate.
  • Vision and ability to help delveop the strategic communication and/or health communication campaigns areas.

  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
