JOB DESCRIPTION

The Project Manager/Structural Engineer designs structures and fabrications that will withstand the pressures, loads and forces they have to endure. This position requires thorough knowledge of civil/structural design and engineering techniques.

This person will also plan and conduct independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria. Also, devise new approaches to problems and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts and graphs, and monitoring work for compliance to applicable codes, accepted engineering practices and company standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural design and analysis calculations using governing codes and standards, engineering formulas, skills and experience.
  • Layout and detail portions of projects using schematic layout by project lead engineer. May be assigned responsibility for schematic or conceptual layouts when qualified.
  • Provide drawings for own designs and produce sketches to incorporate in drawings by Designers/Drafters.
  • Provide design calculations as needed for a variety of project types.
  • Assist with estimates for heavy fabrications.
  • Review designs prepared by department staff (shop drawings, calculations, details and specifications).
  • Communicate with customers to ensure satisfaction with our product.
  • Attend field meetings and inspections as needed.
  • Develop probable construction cost estimates for projects within the department.
  • Work with field installation personnel in addressing structural issues during system installations.
  • Provide assistance with QA/QC of shop fabrications.
  • May direct and supervise other Designers/Drafters activities.
  • Visit all jobsites that have major structural steel components on a regular basis to monitor progress.
  • Actively monitor projects and work with the Project Manager to determine if there are issues and correct quickly to maintain profitability of job.
  • Attend project kick off meetings as requested.
  • In coordination with the Shop Foreman, monitor the coordination of structural shop fabrications.
  • Conduct research into project-related issues and products.
  • Ensure that project milestones and deliverables are being tracked.
  • Ability to travel to jobsites, meetings, etc. approximately 5% of the time.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with Structural Emphasis, or a related field
  • 1+ years of experience - 3+ is preferred
  • Civil/structural design experience in an industrial construction environment is a plus
  • Union and mechanical contracting experience a plus
  • Working knowledge of typical industry building/construction codes
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines
  • Technically competent with estimating programs, such as Sage estimating
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of personalities at all levels of the organization (both internally and externally)
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Software (Autocad, Revit, etc) and/or Solidworks.
  • Use of engineering software such as RISA 3D, RISA Foundation, and RISA Connection, Hilti Engineering Suite or Dewalt Design Assist.
