Job Summary:

Leads and optimizes the performance of the SMSC Marketing team responsible for protecting the image, advancing the causes, and meeting the goals of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Tribal Government and its members. Closely collaborates with SMSC non-gaming enterprises and SMSC departments to help influence their success and fulfillment of their objectives. Acting as an in-house agency, this is primarily accomplished through the development and implementation of relevant market strategies, including print ads, web sites, social media, radio and television commercials, video production, print collateral, media releases, special events, promotional activities and general advertising. In coordination with the marketing leadership team, this position develops and reports on media and communications plans internally and with the appropriate external agencies.


Budget/Asset Responsibilities:

Responsible for forecasting revenue driven programs and operating expenses, including: special events; promotion expenses; capital expenditures; labor expenses and miscellaneous expenses. Approves payroll, other financial requisitions, purchase orders, and other capital expenditures. Responsible for adjustments throughout the year including forecasting and variance reporting.


Primary Duties

Duty/Task Description

  • Responsible for marketing strategy development and tactical plans for over 40 internal clients across SMSC non-gaming enterprises and SMSC departments. This includes driving strategies to promote awareness and engagement within the Community, as well as strategies to grow business volume at enterprises. Maintain the integrity of all SMSC non-gaming brands across multiple media platforms and ensure the execution aligns with the overall marketing strategy. Ensure a creative yet consistent look and feel that adheres to and supports the brand, visual identity, legal guidelines (usage of logo and copyrighted materials for property) and messaging.
  • Act as a liaison and be a collaborative partner between SMSC non-gaming enterprises and SMSC departments on client-related projects as it pertains to marketing. Establish timelines, monitor and adjust project workflow as needed based on priorities and resources.
  • Monitor, analyze and apply latest trends in marketing. Oversee the development and maintenance of SMSC websites and social media accounts.
  • Develop overall communication strategies and media plans for all SMSC non-gaming enterprise initiatives to include but not limited to internal/external communications, public relations, media relations, etc. Establish mutually beneficial vendor relationships with external media and/or other related agencies/services. Authorize and mentor the marketing leadership team in negotiating media contract rates as it pertains to both traditional and digital media
  • Develop budget, manage implementation of that budget through course of fiscal year.
  • Oversee operation of SMSCs print shop.
  • Build, develop and maintain a marketing team based around a competent, dedicated, talented, efficient staff members. Manage the department by hiring, supervising, assignment within the departmental staff. Interviews, selects, hires and promotes team members, including training, developing, performance management, disciplinary actions, and terminations.

Job Requirements:

Reflects MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, CERTIFICATION and EXPERIENCE required in order to meet the expectations of this job:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, mass communications, or related field required (two-year degree acceptable with eight or more years of experience in a marketing-related field).
  • MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience leading a team of 10 or more with varying disciplines.
  • Experience in leading successful cross-functional teams, achieving on-time goals, and maintaining budget levels.
  • Experience developing both effective leaders/supervisors and individual contributors through feedback, coaching, and accountability measures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications in both Mac and PC environments, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency in [business] digital marketing as it pertains to CRM, social media, SEO/SEM, email, surveys, Google Ads, etc.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in the following Adobe Creative Suite CC products a plus: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • One or two years of experience in Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, and/or WordPress a plus.
  • Basic or intermediate proficiency in large format printing, as this position directly supports a print shop.
  • Cultural Studies or experience working for a Native American tribe a plus.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record is required.
