Position Description & Details:

Provide technical expertise for technical and educational efforts for northern grown crops. Perform and direct food processing and the development of new products and processes that support NCI educational programs, Technical Service programs and market development activities. This is a non-tenured track and non-research position. Candidate will work with industry clients in confidential manner.

Responsibilities:

Provide technical service, product development and lead projects in the utilization of Northern grown crops, (soybeans, wheat, pulses, oilseeds, corn, barley, and other crops as needed) and their processed products to support under the direction and guidance of the NCI Director and Technical Manager. Lead product development projects by providing supervision and oversight as necessary for processing and prototype development (baking, pasta processing, extrusion, milling and other processing applications) conducted at NCI. Serve as Project Manager for clients and oversee all communication, planning, execution and follow-up of food development and testing services. Provide technical services and information to buyers and end users on the quality, and utilization of Northern grown crops. Develop new expertise on the utilization of Northern grown crops in food products. Participate in professional activities to expand and maintain NCI's capabilities in process and product development by attending training classes/seminars, staying current with literature (functionality, nutrition, regulatory, labeling, etc.). Understand lab and food safety, participate is safety training and meetings. Develop, present and participate in educational programs related to market opportunities and end-product quality of Northern grown crops to producers and end-users. Develop educational programing with the assistance of the NCI Technical Manager, Program Managers and NCI Director. Develop and present technical information and laboratory demonstrations for educational programing for domestic and international grain buyers and processors. Provide assistance to commodity check-off groups and trade teams to support educational activities. Provide crop quality and utilization seminars to commodity and private organizations. Serve as NCI Technical Expert and Consultant in the quality and utilization of Northern grown crops. Participate in NCI activities as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • MS with 3 years' experience in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry or agricultural related degree.
  • Demonstrated ability in product development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Familiarity with northern grown crops, their quality characteristics, and their use in food products.
  • Experience or understanding of Baking, Extrusion and pasta production.
  • Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry or agricultural related degree
