Description

The Department of Housing & Residence Life at the University of North Dakota is a large diverse auxiliary enterprise, whose mission is to deliver housing services to the University community in a manner that is congruent with the overall mission of the University. Reporting to the Associate Director of Residence Life, Resident Directors (RDs) will assume a visible leadership role in the development of positive residential communities serving approximately 300-800 single student housing residents in 2-3 buildings. Resident Directors are expected to provide effective supervision of 1-2 Community Assistants and approximately 10-20 Resident Assistants. The Resident Director is responsible for the day-to-day management and delivery of student-centered services including: supervision, learning outcome- based programming, building security, facilities management, budget management, student conduct processes, emergency response and general administrative duties. Resident Directors interpret and administer university policies, to ensure community standards are met. As full-time live in positions, Resident Directors provide primary on-call support and emergency response. Resident Directors are expected to engage in collaborative working relationships with other Housing & Residence Life staff as well as other campus departments. This position requires work outside the normal office hours as necessary to support community development, staff training and professional development of student leaders and staff.

Duties & Responsibilities

Community and Student Development

  • Work with students and residence hall staff members to develop environments which teach students skills in responsible community living and the appreciation of individual differences.

  • Create an academic environment conducive to living-learning and scholarly pursuits (e.g. living-learning communities, faculty interaction, and student success programming).

  • Be aware of student problems and concerns and refer students to appropriate campus resources.

  • Assist and motivate students and residence hall staff members to plan and initiate student learning-oriented programs following a residential curriculum.

  • Assist and advise the Residence Hall Government in conjunction with the Community Assistant.

  • Work with Associate Director/Assistant Director in collaborative programming with campus partners.

Staffing

  • Select, supervise, train, and evaluate community assistants, resident assistants and student support personnel.

  • Conduct one-on-one meetings with student staff members.

  • Assist in the development of staff manuals, educational materials, training programs, and procedures.

  • Assume leadership for a specific collateral assignment (e.g. Professional Staff Development, Living Learning Communities, RA Selection, RA Training, Residential Curriculum, Advising Student Leadership Groups, etc.)

Behavior, Facility, and Safety Management

  • Interpret and uphold University rules, regulations, and policies.

  • Conduct judicial hearings as assigned by the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities.

  • Provide leadership for safety and security programs, policies and procedures in the assigned residence halls.

  • Assume on-call responsibility for the residence halls on a rotating basis.

  • Develop positive working relationships with maintenance and custodial personnel to facilitate the overall functioning of the residence hall.

Administration

  • Supervise and perform the administrative responsibilities of a residence hall, including overseeing hall openings and closings; staffing the residence hall office at designated hours each day; maintaining accountability for funds allocated for hall programming, staff appreciation, and office supplies; maintaining housing records such key audits and occupancy reports; and submitting maintenance requests or incident reports as required.

  • Participate in committees supporting the Department of Housing & Residence Life and the Division of Student Affairs as assigned.

  • During the summer term, assume leadership for specific assignments and projects related to the Housing & Residence Life program or the Division of Student Affairs. Specific projects and summer assignments will be identified in the spring semester.

Required Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple task and priorities

  • Must demonstrate leadership, management and supervisory skills, and be able to communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, parents and other constituents

  • Ability to work outside of routine business hours, including weekends and holidays

  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Undergraduate or graduate experience in a related position serving university students (Housing & Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Government, Judicial Affairs, Resident Assistant, etc.)

  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)

  • Must submit a cover letter and resume specific to this position

  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years prior live-in Residence Life/University Housing experience

  • 1-2 years prior experience supervising residence life staff and/or advising Residence Hall Association and/or student organization(s) or related activity

  • 1-2 years of supervisory and management experience with administrative operations including basic budgeting, administrative process and facilities management

  • 1-2 years of experience with crisis or emergency response/on call

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$36,500/Annual, Exempt, Full-Time, Benefited

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday – Friday 8:00 A.M. – 4:30 P.M.; requires work outside normal business hours during evenings and weekends to respond to housing situations and to support community development, staff training, and professional development of student leaders and staff.  Start date as soon as possible after accepted offer.

Live-In Position Information

Resident Directors are provided a furnished two-bedroom apartment with all utilities paid within the residence halls they oversee.  In addition, Resident Directors and their partner/spouse are provided a board plan.
