Description

This position will work with the Rural Health Information Hub (RHIhub) https://www.ruralhealthinfo.org, a federally-funded information center on rural health issues. This position is responsible for writing content for an online toolkit focused on emergency preparedness for rural communities. The position will be responsible for conducting and assisting in interviews for the purposes of writing rural program models, vignettes, and case studies to be features in the toolkit. This position may also write and edit promotional materials and other web-based content.

This position is funded by a short-duration grant, consequently, the length of employment for this job is limited.  The anticipated end of employment date will be August 31, 2022. 

Position is open for telework.

Department

The Center for Rural Health connects resources and knowledge to strengthen the health of people in rural communities.  For 40 years, we have worked with the public and private sectors expanding a circle of partners to develop creative solutions to critical health issues.  The Center is located at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks. Our approach is multi-disciplinary, as we create solutions to complex challenges.  The Center for Rural Health works with communities, healthcare organizations, healthcare providers, policy-makers, researchers, and rural health stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities

Write vignettes and case studies describing best practices and successes in rural communities to be included in the toolkit.

  • Collaborate with program partners to identify best practices and successes.
  • Assist program management in selecting examples to pursue.
  • Conduct background research, draft questions, and interview appropriate contacts from successful rural programs.
  • Work with digital storyteller to develop complementary video content for vignettes and case studies.
  • Write draft vignette or case study.
  • Work with program contact to finalize draft, ensure accuracy, collect visual and supplementary content.
  • Work with editor and editorial group in revising content.

Write funding and resource content for toolkit.

  • Work with program management and funding resources specialist to identify key funding programs available for emergency preparedness and response.
  • Write web content to describe how these programs can be used by rural communities.
  • Work with editor and editorial group in revising content.

Other research, writing, and editing as assigned.

  • Research and synthesize information for inclusion on the website.
  • Write copy for the RHIhub website.
  • Edit copy for RHIhub’s evidence-based toolkits.
  • Occasional copy editing for other staff members.
  • Act as a resource to other writers, information specialists, and other staff.

Participate in professional activities.

  • Keep current on latest developments in the field and areas of interest through reading, social listening, attending conferences, and electronic communications.
  • Contribute to the advancement of the profession and status of the project, the Center for Rural Health, and the University.

Required Competencies

  • Familiarity with emergency management, emergency preparedness, healthcare, and/or public health response concepts.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong searching skills, including web-based searches.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership skills. 
  • Requires a strong aptitude with technology and demonstrated ability to learn/use new computer software applications.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and ability to be self-directed. 
  • High level of attention-to-detail and the ability to generate high quality and timely work products.
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, take initiative, and to work as part of a team.
  • Be willing to travel occasionally to national, regional, or local events/meeting.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism; will consider other degrees with direct writing or healthcare experience.
  • Experience doing research and conducting interviews to inform articles.
  • Experience with synthesizing complicated information from multiple sources into cohesive and plain language.
  • Experience writing, with demonstrated ability to write for the web.
  • Writing samples must be submitted at the time of application. Please provide the following 3 writing samples:
    • Sample webpage copy (not an article) that uses web-writing best practices to convey information on a topic with which the applicant is familiar, 250-500 words.
    • An email written in a professional style to request an interview with a public health program contact to potentially feature in a case study.
    • A portfolio or another writing sample that demonstrates writing ability, preferably as it relates to health communication. Acceptable items to include: magazine article, case study, webpage copy, academic paper, etc.

  • Hands-on experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, in particular Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Satisfactory criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of U.S. rural health issues through education or work experience. Experience or training with social media strategy. Experience writing for a national audience. Knowledge of format, layout, and design principles of electronic and print publications. Experience working with state or national organizations. Experience developing website content. Experience working with a content management system. Experience or training in using HTML.

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification $41,000 to $60,000/year salary depending on qualifications and experience. Full-time, Benefited, Exempt.

Work Schedule/Start Date Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
