HDR Engineering is looking for a Substation Section Manager to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in our Minneapolis office.

The primary duties of the Substation Section Manager are responsibility for the operational management and oversight of a production section including project delivery, staffing, quality, utilization, workload forecasting, work-sharing, safety, morale, recruiting, performance reviews, marketing support, and the general direction of the section to ensure operating plan expectations are met. This position will be the key point of contact for a key, large local and national clients and will maintain the primary relationship with those clients while managing projects and a local team with growth potential. The position will also engage in business development activities to support existing and new clients in the nationally. The Substation Section Manager will also be tasked with providing input into the MN/WI Power Delivery business plan and help in the development of key strategic initiatives for the area. Experience with distribution, transmission line, substation, or communications projects would be an added benefit.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Substation Section Manager, well count on you to

Be responsible for Program and/or Project Management and oversight of substation projects of all sizes and complexity, including scope and/or proposal development, project team development and assignment, project execution, project closeout, and quality control, schedule, and budget management.
Understand basic project management tools and techniques including client goals and objectives, contract types and project risk, work breakdown structures, project scope, schedule, and budget, financial management and controls, including earned value, and project closeout.
Be an effective written and verbal communicator.
Maintain a positive working environment for all staff.
Supervise substation team leads and staff located in Minnesota and Wisconsin and provide oversight over workload, training, and performing annual performance reviews of team members.
Coordinate with company recruiting staff, business class and national leadership to develop a hiring plan and grow the group based on client and work sharing needs.
Establish a network of relationships with technical and leadership peers in other offices and leverage those relationships and resources with work sharing opportunities.
Develop and maintain a mentorship program for the Substation team members. This shall be developed in conjunction with the System Protection and Studies section and the Transmission section, so cross training opportunities are identified and provided to staff.
Coordinate with Area leadership to promote and ensure the work performed in the section meets the corporate and HDR Quality Management System (QMS) requirements and that a culture of quality is maintained in the section.
Maintain up to date and accurate workload and utilization forecasting that aligns with Area and Business Class expectations.
Participate in client management, project management and/or technical support activities. This includes but is not limited to representing HDR at industry conferences and participating in mid-year and annual budgeting, Business Class working groups, annual strategic development meetings, and Area Power Delivery coordination meetings.
Participate in local or national industry associations as a committee member.
Increase HDR's local or national exposure by developing white papers or being a presenter at conferences or association meetings.
Complete internal project management fundamentals training within six months of hire date.
Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
7+ years of substation design and project management experience.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required
Familiarity with various types of substation design layouts.
Working knowledge of jobsite electrical hazards and associated safety precautions, including working clearances and personal protective equipment.
Strong interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills.
Previous work experience in a senior technical and/or leadership role either with a utility or consulting engineering firm is preferred.
Strong communication and listening skills a must
Must have the ability to handle multiple assignments
Good leadership, communication and organizational skills are essential
Some travel may be required.
