Job Description

The Principal Product Development Engineer is responsible for performing or leading all aspects of product development with a focus on technology research, technology evaluation and technical planning. Additional experience in new technology integration, supporting the Marketing function in identifying new opportunities, VoC, verification and validation are desirable.

The primary focus and responsibilities of the position are for a hands on, self-sufficient individual with the ability to perform their own investigation in front-end programs, capable of evaluating current technologies and developing new technologies and solutions through direct evaluation, documenting their findings. The individual must be comfortable designing, building and testing their own solutions e.g. generate CAD models and prototypes and performing their own tissue / mechanical / electrical testing. Strong communication / presentation skills are necessary to then provide findings to team members and senior management.

As these investigations mature into development projects, the Principal Product Development Engineer must be comfortable assisting and defining product specifications, design inputs, product design, verification testing and supporting design validation studies. He or she must fully understand medical device design control requirements and be able to effectively manage product / technology investigational projects and work effectively in a cross functional team. May serve as an extended team member on NPD projects. Conducts feasibility studies of the technology / prototype to determine ability to function as intended. Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development.

May provide leadership and direction to Engineering Technicians and mentor less experienced engineers within and across OSTA sites in best practices for the use of engineering tools and methods.

Job Duties
* Project leader on Exploratory, Discovery, TRP and TDP Projects.
* Owns all aspects of concept, technology and product development activities, such as prototyping, verification testing, authors protocols and reports, design validation studies; risk management documentation, design reviews, and documentation for regulatory requirements for FDA submission.
* Develops engineering solutions, investigate competing technologies, research the patent landscape, and protect engineering solutions by filing invention disclosures.
* Responsible for planning, scheduling, and executing all assigned projects.
* Consults with the Sales, Marketing, and clinicians to facilitate proper design of new or modified products.
* Conducts testing and collects the necessary product data.
* Works directly with Marketing to define early product opportunity ideas and specify new product user requirements, design inputs for medical devices.
* Develops technical reports documenting findings of research investigations.
* Acts as a consultant, as needed.
* All Other Essential Duties as directed.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or the equivalent in years of industry experience.
* Minimum years of related experience: 9+ years with Bachelor's degree, or 8+ years with Master's degree, or 5+ with PhD.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience in statistical analysis package (Stat Ease, Minitab) preferred.
* Must have working knowledge of FDA requirements, including 820CFR, ISO14971, IEC60601, GMP and other standards as they relate to the design and manufacture of medical devices.
* Proficient in Microsoft Windows environment, Outlook, excel, MS project, 3D CAD/CAM software.
* Must be able to solve complex problems and provide guidance to other engineers.
* Must be able to work with ambiguity and use good judgement in making decisions. Able to balance risk and opportunities.
* Must be able to collaborate effectively with others, works well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.
* Must be able to manages resources and drives for results, effectively managing projects and timelines.
* Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing. Strong presentation skills and the ability influence.
* Inspires and motivates others and provides work direction.
