Position Description & Details:

A full-time post Agricultural Research Technician position is available in the Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University, Fargo. The successful candidate will assist the project leader to establish, manage, and complete field, greenhouse, and controlled environment research experiments. Primary job responsibilities include agronomic and horticultural crop production and management (i.e., fertilizing, tilling, planting, cultivating, and harvesting), irrigation management, weed community assessment, sample collection and processing, data entry, routine cleaning and organization, and careful record keeping. The Agricultural Research Technician will operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment, including many types of farm machinery. The position will coordinate daily tasks with graduate students, manage summer workers, and interact collegially with other project leaders and research specialists.

Advertised Salary: $38,000+/year

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associates degree, or three years of relevant experience
  • Five years of demonstrated experience operating and maintaining farm machinery
  • Demonstrated experience implementing irrigation systems
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and experience driving trailers and large equipment
  • Basic computer competence for record keeping (Word) and data organization (Excel)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with custom fabrication or modification of tools or equipment
  • Experience conducting research in agronomic and/or horticultural systems
  • Experience managing plant growth in greenhouses
  • Experience using environmental sensing equipment such as soil moisture probes
  • ND Certified Pesticide Applicators License, or ability to become certified

Physical Demands:
  • Operate and transport small- to mid-sized agricultural equipment
  • Lift/carry up to 50 pounds
  • Work outside in occasionally challenging weather conditions (heat or cold)
  • Work longer hours than 40/hr per week when seasonally necessary
