Department Summary:

Riskmanagement involves the identification, evaluation, financing, and reduction ofproblems that include injuries to patients, staff, and visitors or losses tothe organization caused by damage to the building or financial losses fromissues with contracts, etc. Specifically risk management services at Children'sMinnesota include:

  • Legal case management including working with the hospital attorneys for malpractice cases, investigations by professional licensing boards, and other cases. This includes investigation into the event and working with staff for depositions and trial preparation.
  • Purchase of hospital insurance with the exception of worker's compensation. Insurance includes malpractice, general liability, property, auto, crime, patient transport, and directors and officers among others.
  • Investigation into medical accidents through interviewing of staff, coordination of focused event meetings, and maintenance of documentation.
  • Collaboration with system-wide and department level patient safety efforts to support staff in providing care that is safe and reliable.


Position Summary:

The RiskManager of Insurance and Claims Management is responsible for theorganization's day-to-day insurance and claims management activities, whichinclude, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Coordinating and managing liability claims.
  • Performing organization wide risk assessments.
  • Administering the insurance program.
  • Providing on-call assistance for urgent risk situations
  • Conducting risk management education programs and complying with risk management related standards of The Joint Commission.


Thiswork is completed with the objective of maintaining patient safety, enhancingquality of care, and minimizing loss to the organization. The Risk Manager ofInsurance and Claims Management performs these functions with a primaryreporting relationship to the Senior Director, Compliance and Risk Managementand a secondary reporting relationship to the Chief Legal Officer.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree highly preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum of five years' experience working with healthcare risk management required.
  • Eight or more years in healthcare risk management or insurance arena preferred.
  • Experience with general insurance claims management required.
  • Experience with professional liability litigation management preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to assess situations, consider alternatives and recommend appropriate courses of action in a proactive manner
  • Must be able to analyze data, draw conclusions and make recommendations based on data.
