This position can be based in either St. Paul, MN or Denver, CO.

Telecommuting Policy: A plan has been created to officially rollout a hybrid work-from-home option that will take effect when it is safe to move forward to return to the workplace. This position will participate in this new policy.

Position Summary
Ensure reliability of the Xcel Energy gas transmission system. Perform operational liaison duties between gas transmission system operations, Xcel Energy distribution, Xcel Energy management, Xcel Energy commercial operations, Xcel Energy Gas Supply, and pipelines and residue plants interconnected to the Xcel Energy gas transmission systems in Colorado and Texas. Develop tools and systems to ensure a coordination of the gas control functions of the High Pressure natural gas delivery systems. Responsible for the development, maintenance and delivery of gas controller training program.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Safety: Provide visible leadership and actively contribute to the creation, implementation, and continuous improvement of a strong, sustainable safety culture in partnership with Safety Consultant. Drive real time safety accountability by engaging the team through safety meeting participation, job briefs, audits, training, accident investigation/event assessment, and job site observations.
  • Business Optimization & Strategy: Evaluate team performance based on operational efficiency, reliability and quality metrics and take corrective action where appropriate, focusing on process adherence and data integrity. Identify continuous improvement opportunities and drive adoption of process changes through effective collaboration and expectation setting.
  • Talent Management: Recruit talented employees, participate in workforce and development planning efforts, establish clear expectations, and effectively manage performance. Provide training, coaching and oversight and drive employee engagement.
  • Operational Effectiveness - Maintain a continuous presence in the work environment and assist in removing barriers with pre-requisites, materials, stakeholder, and other issues. Ensure correct crew composition and skills are in place to meet operational, reliability, customer and financial objectives. Assist in preparing resource forecasts and providing input to longer-term work plans
  • Assembles, interprets, summarizes and standardizes operational practices to ensure consistent routine and emergency system operation and effective use of high pressure gas assets Identify action plans/guidelines for normal system operation in addition to alternative operating actions in case of system upset that can be used by the controllers to manage the operation of the system on an ongoing basis.
  • Update, develop, maintain, revise procedures and polices contained in Gas Control Manual and Gas Control Training Manual. Develops and delivers related training for gas system control department to ensure consistent and safe operation of the system. Evaluate effectiveness of the training and modify as needed.
  • Serves as primary backup to the gas control manager as needed and serves as a technical resource and advisor for the manager to maximize the effectiveness of both people.


Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in engineering, physics, or business.
  • Equivalent experience in gas control or gas system planning may be may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum of six years of experience in the natural gas industry, preferably in high-pressure gas applications.
  • Ability to understand and apply FERC, PUC and NAESB standards to business cases as necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex data analyses.
  • Ability to react in a stressful environment where it is required to continuously prioritize job tasks.
  • Ability to formulate ideas into work process.
  • Experience with SCADA systems strongly preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in supervisory/management of bargaining unit employees preferred
