Position Description & Details:
The Director will have administrative responsibility for pursuing excellence in agricultural research and educational programs for the CREC, located near Carrington, ND. The Director will provide leadership, supervision and performance evaluations for Center staff, and facilitate collaboration between the Center staff and other research and Extension professionals in the NDSU system, as well as agencies, organizations, and entities that aid agriculture, related industries, or economic activities in the region. The Director will manage the Center's budget and coordinate budget development in conjunction with the Director of the NDAES, the CREC advisory board and State Board of Agricultural Research and Education. The Director will provide leadership in obtaining external, competitively funded research and/or educational awards, and develop collaborative projects important to the well-being of rural communities, agricultural production systems and natural resources in central North Dakota. Research effort focuses on dryland and irrigated crop production practices, crop germplasm evaluation and improvement, crop fertility and crop nutrition, soil health and resource improvement, plant disease control and management, evaluation of new agricultural technologies, cropping systems and crop rotation research, crop-livestock nutrient management, integration of crop and livestock production, beef cattle feeding, feedlot management, intensive cow/calf production, growing and finishing traits, carcass data and meat quality, sustainable agriculture practices, foundation seedstocks production, and fruit and berry production.

About the Center:
The Carrington Research Extension Center is strategically located in North Dakota's heartland. Its research and educational programs address the needs of the crop and livestock sectors of the state's agricultural industry.

CREC programs are implemented on a land base of just over 2,000 acres; about 1,600 managed as dryland (non-irrigated) and the remainder consists of irrigated cropland. Researchers also conduct off-station crop production field trials near Dazey, Wishek, LaMoure, and Fingal. In addition, the CREC operates an irrigation research station at the Oakes Irrigation Research Site.

Center facilities include the headquarters building, a state-of-the art agronomy lab and greenhouse, a new state-of-the-art seed conditioning plant, and seed and equipment storage buildings. The livestock unit can accommodate about 600 head of beef cattle and includes a drylot cow-calf facility, feed mill, replicated pens for feedlot cattle, feed and forage storage, and animal shelters.

The center's scientists and Extension specialists collaborate with NDSU Main Station and other REC faculty, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service scientists, agricultural industry research and development professionals, agricultural commodity groups and scientists from throughout the U.S. on research projects.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned M.S. in an agricultural discipline closely aligned with the Center's research programs from an accredited institution.
  • Three years of documented experience in planning, designing, and implementing research or extension programs related to fields aligned with the mission of the center including but not limited to cropping systems, agronomy, plant pathology, animal science, soil science and natural resource management, precision agriculture, agricultural economics, livestock production research, sustainable agriculture, or other closely related fields.
  • Demonstrated ability and skills in people management, leadership, team building, and effective delegation.
  • Demonstrated abilities in fiscal management.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding, and experience developing strong collaborative research with other scientists, research extension centers and/or agencies and organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with diverse agricultural clientele, agri-business, community groups, and local and state policy makers.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with scientists, agricultural producers, and other clientele associated with agriculture and natural resources.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Earned Ph.D. in an agricultural discipline closely aligned with the Center's research programs from an accredited institution.
  • Significant experience and accomplishments in research in an area related to applicable research needs for central North Dakota.
  • Demonstrated experience with crop and/or livestock production systems.
  • Extensive and documented experience as a leader of multi-disciplinary research and extension programs and a record of accomplishment leading multidisciplinary teams and groups in a land grant university.
  • Demonstrated and effective use of technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large, complex budgets.
  • Significant record of creativity, initiative, and entrepreneurial approach to garnering funds to support research or extension programming.
  • Ability to work across distance to accomplish research and extension mission with main station and other research extension centers.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and experience with management of projects and resources.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and supervising employees in a collegial fashion.
  • Demonstrated experience or extensive knowledge of crop-based seedstock production practices.
