The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team. The Airport Police Department (APD) is one of the largest police forces in the state and has a supportive governing body.

2020 Salary Range: $31.165 - $42.198 per hour. Starting wage is dependent upon experience and qualifications. A 5% educational incentive is also available. Additional pay offered for those serving as a Field Training Officers or Instructors.

2021 wages will be available when contract is finalized.

Hiring Process Timeline (tentative)
  • Panel Interview = Week of November 15
  • Chief's Interview = Week of November 29 or December 6
  • Background Investigation = Begins week of December 6 or December 13
  • Tentative start date = February 14
Candidates advancing, but not hired, will also be included in an eligibility list for future hiring processes.

Position Description

Responsible for the safety, protection and law enforcement duties involving the airport community. Respond to calls for service, conduct patrol operations, implement security practices, investigate accidents, prepare reports and perform other law enforcement operations and activities within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC).

Job Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

Patrol
  • Patrol by vehicle, bicycle or foot, airport property to include terminals, air operations area (AOA) and parking lots
  • Conduct surveillance
  • Arrest offenders in violation of federal, state and local laws and ordinances
  • Provide assistance to motorists and pedestrians
  • Provide information, direction and service to the public
  • Take initial reports on criminal and non-criminal activities
  • Deter crime and disorder
  • Assist Hennepin County Medical Examiner on fatalities
  • Assist lost and disturbed persons
  • Represent the MAC in a manner consistent with positive public relations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Security
  • Respond to checkpoints and handles calls consistent with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations
  • Respond to staffed security guard posts to provide assistance as needed
  • Provide assistance to private security guard posts as needed
  • Enforce security ordinance and applicable federal regulations
  • Educate employees and travelers on security ordinances
  • Assist tenant airlines and TSA on the sterile concourses, gates and customs areas
  • Take appropriate enforcement action
Auto Accident Investigations
  • Take information for accident reports
  • Protect the accident scene
  • Render first aid to injured parties
  • Assist towing companies
  • Provide traffic control at scene
Reports
  • Write clear and legible reports on all incidents dispatched to and self-initiated activity
  • Submit reports dealing with suggestions for improvement of MAC work/operations areas
  • Record information for permanent files
Assist Other Agencies
  • Make arrests on warrants
  • Check flights for wanted/missing persons when requested by another law enforcement agency
  • Provide escorts for other agencies on request
  • Provide VIP and dignitary protection upon request
Security Threats
  • Secure threatened area
  • Protect persons and property
  • Investigate suspicious persons
  • Conduct preliminary investigation
Person Transportation
  • Transport arrested persons to jail
  • Transport intoxicated persons to detox or the hospital
  • Transport mentally ill persons to the hospital
  • Transport public, where assistance has been provided (i.e. motor vehicle accident, stalled vehicle)
Court Duty
  • Sign complaints against violators
  • Testify in the court systems
Duties as Assigned
  • May be assigned to specialized units such as, Emergency Response Team or hostage negotiations
  • May be assigned as field training officer, background investigator, cart inspector, firearms instructor, first-aid instructor or other specific areas
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Training/Licensure Requirements
  • Successfully complete MN POST Board and Airport Police Department (APD) training as required
  • Meet/maintain firearms proficiency as outlined by APD policy

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a Peace Officer by the State of Minnesota
  • Possess a valid state-issued driver's license
  • No felony convictions as defined by Minnesota State Statutes
  • Medically, physically, and psychologically fit to perform the job duties
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written skills using the English language
  • Ability to effectively work with the public
Desirable Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years or more of recent experience as a full-time, licensed police officer in a small to mid-size police department
  • Work experience in a mission specific police department as a police officer
  • Ability to fluently communicate in a second language
  • Previous experience working with culturally and economically diverse populations and communities
