Position Description & Details:

The Department of Plant Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to participate in a sunflower genetic and genomic research project to apply genomic tools to accelerate disease resistance breeding in confection sunflower. This position requires a Ph.D. in plant genetics or a related discipline with solid experience in standard molecular genomic techniques. Knowledge of bioinformatics and online database usage is required. Major duties include high-resolution genetic and physical mapping of rust resistance genes, sequencing the target region for identifying the gene candidates, elucidating the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying the gene-mediated resistance, analyzing data, and publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals. The incumbent will also develop user-friendly ‘perfect' markers suitable for marker-assisted selection of the genes in sunflower breeding. The incumbent must be able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Advertised Salary: $45,000

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in plant genetics/genomics and bioinformatics or a closely related discipline;
  • Research experience in molecular marker (SNP, SSR, and STS) analysis and genetic mapping;
  • Research experience in high-throughput genotyping, and data mining and interpretation with different genotyping platforms;
  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and online database usage, SNP calling from whole genome resequencing;
  • Knowledge of plant diseases and plant breeding;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience in sequence analysis with state-of-the-art softwares and resources, including sequence alignment, gene prediction, gene annotation, phylogenetic analysis
  • Hands on research experience of molecular technique in gene functional analyses.
