Responsibilities:

Provide manual grounds care in the upkeep of lawns, trees, shrubs, flower beds, and athletic fields so that University grounds are maintained in a neat, well-groomed condition
Mow, landscape, trim hedges, seed, fertilize, weed
Place pest control chemical on campus trees, flowers and vines.
Operate snow removal equipment during winter so that the parking areas, ramps, sidewalks and drives within campus boundaries are maintained free of ice and snow
Use snow blower and/or shovel as required.
Operate and perform maintenance/minor repairs to skid steer loaders, motor grader, pay loader, sanders and other heavy equipment including trucks.
o    Check potentially dangerous areas for ice and compact snow. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of horticulture techniques and turfgrass management practices.
  • Experience in the safe use of lawn and landscape equipment consisting of both hand held tools and riding machinery.
  • Experience with snow removal practices using both hand and heavy equipment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (with air brake indorsement) within 2 months of hiring date.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to work independently or in a group.
  •  Knowledge of maintenance and repair of grounds related equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of pesticide/fertilizer application.
  • Experience with athletic field maintenance.
  •  Experience in the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  •  Groundskeeping experience on a multiple building complex.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job including lifting and moving at least 60 pounds (and occasionally more), frequent bending, stooping, lifting, reaching above shoulder level, pushing and pulling as well as climbing ladders.
Working conditions and physical surroundings which include working inside, outside or both and sometimes in inclement weather; areas which have noise/vibrations; in areas which are dusty/poorly ventilated, work from ladders, platforms or man lifts.

This plan applies to employees who are required to have a commercial driver's license (CDL) to perform the assigned duties of their position.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges & Universities (MnSCU) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to MnSCU’s vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
