Position Summary:

This position provides support to the Chief Credit Officer and the Lending Management function in working to identify credit weaknesses or areas of improvement and then developing appropriate policy, procedures, tools and training to impact change. This position is responsible for updating Alerus loan policy and procedures to ensure appropriate risk management practices are being maintained. The position is responsible for underwriter training and management of the credit analyst group. This position is also responsible for implementing and overseeing the construction loan process for all commercial loan draws and provides indirect oversight of the retail construction loan process.

Essential Responsibilities:

Job Function 1: Loan Policy and Procedures Administration - 20%
  • Responsible for developing, updating and maintaining loan policies and procedures to ensure the appropriate risk profile is in place.
  • Submit loan policy to the Bank Board at least annually for review and approval. Complete detailed summary memo to board for all recommended updates. Communicate and train business units on all changes.
  • Incorporate new loan products into policy as needed with appropriate risk management framework in place.

Job Function 2: Underwriter Training - 20%
  • Partner with training department to develop and implement a standardized training plan for all new underwriters.
  • Perform training of existing underwriting staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Address training related loan review and regulatory findings, ensure additional training is completed to prevent reoccurrence of finding.

Job Function 3: Credit Projects - 20%
  • Organize, lead and help execute company projects in partnership with the Alerus project team.
  • Identify need for additional projects, complete project plan.

Job Function 4: Manage Credit Analyst Team - 20%
  • Lead credit analyst team to ensure that financial spreads are completed timely and accurately, provide pre-flight and annual review support to the markets.
  • Provide required training and development to team to allow for career progression within credit.
  • Maintain minutes for credit committee and pre-flight meetings.
  • Allocate additional responsibilities to the team as necessary to support required credit processes.

Job Function 5: Construction Loan Administration - 20%
  • Manage a centralized construction loan process including the review of construction loans prior to closing to ensure proper documentation is received in accordance with required procedures.
  • Monitor, verify, balance and provide instruction to disburse draw requests to ensure the project costs and funds available remain in balance at all times.
  • Ensure proper draw documentation is received and imaged in accordance with required procedures.
  • Ensure construction loans are supported by regular site inspections.
  • Coordinate communication and activities of all parties involved between borrowers, guides/advisors, underwriting, loan operations, third party contractors, appraisers, title companies, architects/engineers, and inspectors.
  • Provides quarterly reporting on all construction loan projects.

Position Requirements:

Qualifications:
  • College degree in business, accounting, or finance preferred; or equivalent experience working with business or residential loans or business accounting or records systems.
  • 10+ years of experience in credit management.
  • 3+ years of experience in construction loan administration preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of business, real estate and construction lending
  • Working knowledge of computer software programs with specific emphasis on Microsoft Excel and Word programs.

Physical Demands - Must be met with or without a reasonable accommodation:
  • Extended periods of time sitting at a desk and using office equipment.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer/laptop for approximately 8 hours per day.
  • Extended time is spent reviewing physical and electronic documents.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • Periodically, may also do light lifting of supplies and materials which weighs in at approximately 20 lbs.
  • Will spend most of time in an indoor environment.
