Description

This position will organize, triage and accomplish brain donation and technical preparation for Lieber Institute from autopsies after informed consent for brain donation is obtained. This includes removal, sectioning, freezing and preservation of the brain and dura according to protocols provided. The position will involve working with funeral homes and others to move and arrange transport for decedents. The individual will perform photography, written and oral documentation of brain and autopsy findings. Excellent visual and communicative skills are required and a mastery of English language. Excellent computer skills with common office programs, including word processing, databases and web-based reporting is required. Attention to detail and accuracy of identification is required. Work will involve biohazards, chemical hazards, odors, dry ice and liquid nitrogen freezing protocols and exposure to deceased human remains.  Work will require respectful communication with families in distress.  Work will involve obtaining blood, vitreous, urine and other samples from deceased human remains. The position required observance of privacy for decedents and families.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Removal of brain per Lieber Protocols
  • Identification and proper consent of decedent
  • Removal of brain, sectioning and freezing per protocol; preparation and storage prior to shipment by approved process to MI, Baltimore or other designated site; Collection of dura and other tissue samples per protocol; Collection of blood or other fluids per protocol, recording of abstracted medical and social information
  • This involves stress from working with deceased humans and grieving families.  Strict attention to detail, identification and completion of tasks required
  • General assistance for autopsy and death investigation duties, including referral to organ, tissue and brain donation possibilities
  • Movement and cleaning body as directed by the pathologist
  • Assist on performing radiologic studies and/or photography of decedent
  • Inventory clothing and personal effects of decedent
  • Record weights and other measurements of decedent
  • Assist with prosection (dissection) of major organs systems, including head and neck under direction of pathologist
  • Clean and suture body following autopsy examination, appropriately shroud decedent and release to funeral home
  • Clean work and autopsy area following autopsy or examination
  • Information management and case accuracy in death investigations and autopsy
  • Assist with entering information into case management system and any associated databases
  • Assist with file preparation of cases, including logging of toxicology and other studies Assist with inventory control and case completion logs
  • Assure complete accuracy of information including names, case numbers, recorded information, dates and times within case logs and case management system
  • Perform audits as directed of cases within management system as directed for completeness and information accuracy
  • Assist with general office duties including ordering supplies, answering phones, assisting visitors and families to facility

Required Competencies

  • Must have or rapidly acquire ability to follow protocols involving brain, tissue and fluid removal, preservation and shipping of human remains
  • Maintain respect and dignity of human remains, sensitivity toward families and bereaved
  • Requires use/operation of computer software, lab equipment, organizational/prioritization ability, interpersonal/oral/written communication skills, customer oriented/service, detail oriented
  • Must maintain strict biosafety and universal precautions
  • Must be willing to work with and prosect (dissect) deceased human remains
  • Must be detail oriented. Must have excellent visual observation, excellent communication skills and mastery of English language
  • Second language (Spanish, Native American, French, or other) is an asset

Minimum Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Science, Nursing, or Laboratory field
  • Experience maintaining strict confidentiality and respect for decedents, crime and death scenes
  • Experience with standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases
  • Experience following biosafety protocols and universal precautions in all laboratory and autopsy work 
  • Must agree to random drug testing
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in autopsy practice and performance
  • Experience in forensic or mortuary science
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Nursing, or Laboratory field

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$40,000+/year; Full-Time, Benefited, Non-Exempt

Work Schedule/Start Date

Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm; may include occasional weekends
