Description

The Data Analytics Research Group within the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of North Dakota is seeking a highly motivated research associate to work with Dr. Rabiei to advance understanding and facilitate continuous improvement of environmental compliance framework in the oil and gas industry, utilizing innovative data-driven intelligent solutions. This is a full-time position, starting from January 2022. 

Duties & Responsibilities

The research associate is expected to work both independently and collaboratively with graduate students within the group to:

  • Analyze the current oil and gas regulatory framework to determine potential overlaps, conflicts, and gaps in the regulations and identify critical knowledge gaps to address compliance issues.
  • Create and conduct surveys and interviews with stakeholders to identify the most prominent data-related challenges within the regulatory and compliance procedures.
  • Assist in the development of an integrated data infrastructure for systematic data collection, processing and assimilation necessary for the research.
  • Assess and demonstrate the viability of data-driven approaches for root-cause analysis and predictive analytics for compliance optimization.
  • Develop novel machine learning and deep learning tools for predictive maintenance models, integrating engineering, regulatory and economic determinants.
  • Contribute to writing and submitting research publications within the group.
  • Develop innovative ideas for research proposals and assist in writing competitive grants.
  • Assist in the development of interdisciplinary graduate courses and seminars.

 Required Competencies

  • An engineering background and strong academic and/or professional experience in data science and machine learning modelling.
  • A technical aptitude in oil and gas operations and prior knowledge and experience in industrial regulatory affairs and HSE compliance analysis are highly desired.
  • Must have excellent teamwork and communication skills with strong interests in the research topic. 

 Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in an engineering field (preferably petroleum, chemical, industrial, civil and mechanical engineering) 
  • Experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Must have practical experience in at least one of the ML software such as R, Python or MATLAB
  • Experience in data analytics and machine learning
  • Successful completion of criminal history records check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with oil and gas environmental, health and safety regulatory requirements
  • Experience in proposal writing
  • Publications in any one or more areas such as big data, cyber-security, and artificial intelligence

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification

$60,000/year, exempt

Work Schedule and Start Date

Monday- Friday, 8am-4:30pm, 01/2022 projected start date
