Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD), a national leader in environmental protection and pollution prevention, seeks a full time Environmental Program Coordinator to develop and implement public
outreach and programs to support the District’s mission and strategic goals. The work includes frequent contact with public individuals and organizations; development and implementation of community-based programs for residents and organizations, and associated public education programs; and related work as assigned.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Develops, implements and sustains District programs.
Responsible for effective communications with a variety of audiences, developing awareness and
outreach programs, and working as a liaison between District and customers, community members,
contractors and other governmental units.
Develops programs combining operational, community and communications components.
Collects and analyzes data, creates qualitative and quantitative research projects, synthesizes
research findings, and prepares results to support decision making.
Responsible for recommending and working within program budgets.
Progressively expands knowledge of current trends, information, and developments in issues
related to District program areas.
Identifies and understands existent and emergent threats related to the District’s reputation,
operational success and fulfillment of its mission.
Conducts training within areas of responsibility for District staff.
Maintains a constant awareness of safe work practices.
Monitors compliance with the District Safety Program to complete work without accidents or injuries.
Attends in-service training as required by supervisor.
Performs related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles and practices of effective communication
Knowledge of District programs and current environmental issues
Knowledge and ability to plan, coordinate and implement projects
Ability to work independently and in a team to meet deadlines
Ability to be flexible and adapt to changes and interruptions that may impact work responsibilities and work flow
Ability to understand, develop and implement actions and timelines required to achieve District’s desired outcomes
Knowledge and ability to anticipate and proactively plan for communications needs
Ability to prepare effective and accessible oral, written and graphic materials on a variety of topics for a variety of audiences
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff, co-workers, general public, vendors, media, and representatives of other government agencies; and to develop and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with professionals in the wastewater, solid waste and environmental fields, including attending and presenting at conferences
Knowledge and ability to respond to emergency conditions and develop appropriate course(s) of action,
evaluate emergency and crisis responses, develop and disseminate crisis communications
Skill at presenting complex, technical information to professional and nonprofessional audiences
Ability to develop and conduct formal displays and presentations on issues pertinent to the District
Knowledge of public relations techniques, including interacting with media, developing communications
for use by media, and making use of new media
Possess the skills and the ability to design and edit publications
Advanced skills in computer software programs, not limited to Microsoft® Office
Knowledge of desktop publishing, graphic design, digital media, web design, social media platforms
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited college/university with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in environmental science or studies, biology, science education, communications, or related field; and a minimum of two
years of full-time equivalent work experience in public education, environmental education, communications, professional waste management or planning, or a closely related field. Possess a valid driver's license.
