Position Description & Details: Tenure track, research and administration (70%), teaching (30%), academic year (9 month) appointment. Rank of Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities:

The Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics invites applications for a tenure track position at the Professor, Associate Professor or Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2021. The tenure home is the Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics. The position will also lead the Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies (CAPTS) as director, and be affiliated with the Challey Institute for Global Innovation & Growth (Challey Institute) as a Challey Scholar.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop leadership in the department's and Challey Institute's research and teaching programs in agricultural trade and policy. Exceptional quantitative skills are expected to strengthen the candidate's research and teaching program. Teaching responsibilities at the graduate and undergraduate levels will depend upon the needs of the department.

As Director of the CAPTS, the successful candidate will be expected to establish a well-funded and high-quality research program; provide leadership; promote collaboration among departmental colleagues; extend research results to constituents; and carry out the mission of the CAPTS research center.

As a Challey Institute Scholar, the successful candidate will be expected to conduct research, teaching, and outreach that contributes to the Institute's mission, specifically advancing understanding of international trade and identifying policies that enhance economic opportunity.

The mission of the CAPTS research center is to enhance net farm income through in-depth trade and agricultural policy research for crop producers, ranchers, and decision-makers in private and public sectors in the Northern Plains. The mission of the Challey Institute is to advance understanding in the areas of innovation, trade, and institutions to identify policies and solutions that enhance economic growth and opportunity.

Advertised Salary: Commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • An earned Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Economics or related field;
  • Desire and ability to support the missions of the Center for Agricultural Policy and Trade Studies (CAPTS) and the Challey Institute;
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct agricultural policy and trade research and disseminate results in leading academic journals;
  • Demonstrated ability to secure and administer external funding;
  • Record of expertise in quantitative methods;
  • Evidence of leadership and establishing collaborative relationships with colleagues;
  • Evidence of teaching or extension education effectiveness;
  • Ability to communicate research results to clientele groups;
  • Ability to engage in effective teaching;
  • A desire to conduct research in agricultural policy, trade policy, and farm efficiency;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and essential information technology skills; and
  • Familiarity with the Land Grant mission and Northern Plains agriculture.

  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to maintain adequate budget to conduct agricultural policy and trade research and to disseminate results;
  • Demonstrated experience with multi-year, multi-investigator research funded by grants or contracts;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage graduate students or research staff;
  • Capacity to conduct research and provide an effective outreach program focused on trade policy, farm policy and farmers' income;
  • Evidence of an effective applied research program;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Experience in agricultural and trade policy research and outreach;
  • Experience in farm profitability or farm efficiency research and outreach;
  • Experience in agricultural trade research and outreach;
  • Demonstrated record of communicating research findings to diverse audiences;
