Position Information

Provide technical safety office and field support for the Hazardous Materials Program to include duties such as receiving requests for hazardous chemical and biohazard waste pickup, picking up the waste, coordinating storage, recycling, and disposal of the waste, providing response for chemical spills and technical knowledge and/or active assistance in the clean-up efforts. Also provides technical safety office and field support for the Radiation Safety Program and assistance and support for the Environmental Health Program.

Responsibilities:
  • Receive requests for hazardous chemical and biohazard waste pick-up from campus departments
  • Pick up, ensure proper packaging and labeling, log hazardous waste tickets and transport hazardous waste to proper storage facility
  • Coordinate hazardous waste pick-up and recycling/disposal by vendor and maintain proper documentation and logs
  • Maintain inventory of safety equipment and consumables in the lab space of the Safety office and the Material Handling Facility
  • Advise faculty, staff and students regarding proper waste management techniques and provide recommendations for appropriate action upon request
  • Respond to chemical spills and provide both technical and/or active assistance in clean-up effort
  • Provide technical overview and self-audit services to departments on the campus for compliance with regulatory matters
  • Maintain professional competency and education requirements of the position
  • Maintain cleanliness of chemical storage locations in the Material Handling Facility
  • Monitor sensors in the Material Handling Facility to ensure a safe work environment
  • Monitor chemical and biological safety conditions in laboratories and apprise UP&SO administration of unsafe conditions
  • Calibrate survey meters
  • Conduct sealed source leak testes
  • Conduct lab contamination checks
  • Pick up, ensure proper packaging, log radioactivity waste tickets and transport to proper storage facility
  • Assist in radioactive materials waste pick-up and disposal by vendor and maintain proper documentation and logs
  • Respond to radioactive materials spills and provide technical and/or active assistance in clean-up effort
  • Maintain cleanliness of radioactive material storage locations in the Material Handling Facility
  • Assist with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments as necessary
  • Assist with the development and delivery of various topics of safety training.

Work Schedule:

Five days per week, 40 hours per week. Emergency responses or extraordinary events my entail being called upon occasionally after normal working hours or on weekends.

Advertised Salary:

$50,000+/year, commensurate with experience

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or other natural science
  • Working knowledge and understanding of chemistry, radioactive materials, working with biohazards, and hazardous materials management
  • Must possess a valid driver's license with no more than three moving violations in the past two years
  • Must be able to successfully complete the NDSU Radiation Safety Short Course and the 40 hour HAZWOPER training within six months of hire and as a condition of continued employment
  • Ability to understand and use technical equipment associated with the areas of responsibility of the position
  • Ability to research new technologies and their related safety issues
  • Ability to pass a fit test for respirator usage
  • Must have excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • One or more years of directly related experience in a full-time capacity or equivalent
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NDSU campus and facilities
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office suite of applications, especially Outlook and Excel
  • Familiarity with chemical inventory software systems

Physical Demands:

Must frequently be able to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, climb stairs, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, taste and smell, and be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
