Position Description & Details:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at North Dakota State University (NDSU) seeks an exceptional candidate at the rank of tenured or tenure-track associate or full professor for appointment to the position of KFI Engineers Professor of Energy Stewardship. The successful candidate will have an established record of scholarly achievement and teaching experience that merits appointment at an advanced rank in one or more of the following areas: generation, storage, conversion, distribution or efficient use of energy from clean and sustainable sources. Specific areas of expertise may include, but are not limited to:
  • Technologies for conversion, conservation and efficient use of energy resources
    • Environmental control systems, building efficiency, HVAC systems
    • Transportation (electric/hybrid vehicles, batteries, fuel cells)
  • Clean energy technologies
    • Solar, wind, geothermal, geo-exchange, biofuels, small nuclear reactors (SMR), hydropower, fuel cells.
    • Carbon-footprint analysis
  • Large-scale energy generation and distribution
    • District heating and cooling systems, power generation facilities
    • Combined heat and power
  • Energy storage technologies at various scales
    • Distributed energy generation
    • Batteries, thermal storage, chemical storage, compressed air energy storage

Successful applicants must have a B.S. and an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, and a record of accomplishment that demonstrates outstanding abilities in the following skills: oral and written communication, undergraduate/graduate teaching and course development, research and grantsmanship, publication of scholarly activities in peer reviewed journals, academic and professional advising, and work-place cooperation and collegiality.

Responsibilities:

Through individual leadership and collaboration with other faculty members in the College of Engineering, the candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a nationally competitive, externally funded research program that enhances and expands existing research activities in the ME Department and College of Engineering at NDSU. The candidate will also be expected to develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses related to their area of expertise, as well as foundational courses in the thermo/fluids area; advise undergraduate students; mentor graduate students at the master's and doctoral levels; provide mentorship for capstone design and extra-curricular projects; establish collaborative relationships with local and regional industries; and actively engage in service and outreach to the profession, university, and state.

Work Schedule:

40 hours/week, 9 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications:
  • B.S. and earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline
  • Established record of scholarly achievement in an energy related area
  • Teaching experience in thermo/fluid and energy related courses
  • Established record of obtaining external grants or contracts
  • Ability to develop an externally funded research program at NDSU
  • Ability to develop new courses in an energy related area
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and workplace cooperation skills
  • Ability to mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Active participation and leadership in professional societies and organizations

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience mentoring capstone design projects
  • Experience in developing industry collaborations
  • Registration as a professional engineer
  • Experience supervising MS and/or PhD students to completion of theses/dissertations
